Neil Young's Father Remembered - Scott Young, 1918 - 2005

During the service in honor of his father, Scott Young who died Sunday, his son Neil performed one new song. Neil dedicated the song to his father.

In an article in The Globe and Mail by Kevin Chong, Neil comments on what he learned from his father:

"The most vivid way to get an idea across was to lay oneself bare in the knowledge that others would identify with the bareness, the sometimes painful truth."

Author, Journalist, Rock-star Dad Scott Young Remembered with Love

KINGSTON, Ont. (CP) - Acclaimed Canadian journalist and author Scott Young, a rock-star dad whose career carried him through the Second World War, Olympic Games and Stanley Cups, was remembered above all as a supportive father at a memorial service Thursday.

Music icon Neil Young performed a new song at the service dedicated to his father, who died Sunday in this eastern Ontario city at the age of 87. "I remember him with a lot of love in my heart," a sombre Young said following the service before he ducked into a chauffeur-driven black van with several relatives.

Young was among the small group of invited guests who attended an hour-long memorial service at a local funeral home.

The music legend was the subject of one of his father's books, 1984's Neil and Me, which Young wrote about his relationship with his famous son.

Scott Young's eldest son, Bob, said their father taught them "the idea of following your own star."

"I think that my brother's success, and what he's done as a singer-songwriter, is largely attributable to the support that he got from my parents," said the 63-year-old. "And some of that support was critical."

He said his father stuck by him when he faced drug charges in the 1980s.

"I was in a lot of trouble, but he was very supportive," he said. "It was valuable to me to have somebody close that was in my corner."

Scott Young's writing has been hailed as some of the finest to grace Canadian sports pages.
