Randomly Blogged: "Heart of Gold" and "Cortez The Killer" - Love & Hate
Some random blogs on the "Heart of Gold" film and "Cortez The Killer".
Sort of a love and hate thing.
Over on Rust, the intrepid "Expecting to Fly" boldly posts:
"I liked the film, found it to be entertaining and even a bit moving. However, overall it just came across too slick for me. Those outfits, which were somehow not as gaudy from my balcony seat, were in-your-face corny on the film. Every time I saw Emmylou on stage, I was overwhelmed with desire: the desire to thoroughly scrub her face with a wash-cloth. As far as showing an audience what Neil Young is all about, where was the edginess? Where was the ragged intensity?"

From Nashville City Paper review by Ron Wynn of "Heart of Gold":
"...showcases the beauty, simplicity and moral authority of Young's songs, while frequently demonstrating that he remains a vibrant force at 60 as a performer, vocalist, writer and multi-instrumentalist (he plays guitar, banjo, harmonica and piano at various points)."
From Buffalo Art Voice by M. Faust:
"The new songs are so good, and so pristinely presented, that I was frankly sorry when they ended and Young launched into a set of oldies, mostly from the albums Harvest and Harvest Moon."

Cool "Cortez the Killer" art by Lambiek.Net and a provocative essay on Blog with a View: First Glimpse of Cortez:
"Neal [sic] Young writes some good songs, but his Mesoamerican scholarship leaves a little to be desired."

haahnster's hallucinations: Tonight's The Night - "Tell Waterface to put it in his lung and not in his vein":
"This has to rank right up near the top of the list of sloppy, alcohol-fueled rock albums, surpassed (possibly) only by the Rolling Stones' EXILE ON MAIN ST."
