The Peoples Art Gallery: James Mazzeo's Historical Undertaking of Original Acrylic Paintings autographed by Neil Young - California

Michael Bérubé, International Professor of Danger: "...it’s practically impossible to see the movie without thinking of it as the work of the Neil Young Preservation Society — and this is a good thing: Hey, we still have Neil with us! Things can’t be all bad, now!

But the International Professor of Danger concludes with totally jaw dropping conclusion:
"Ah, but this train of thought leads me to my decisive counterargument. In rock, yes, weak or introspective or whiny or mumbled white-boy vocals are part of the odious apparatus of rockism. But too exclusive a focus on vocals leads straight to fascism."

Say wtf? But with 50+ 70+ 100+ comments on this post already, I'm not going to even try. You must check out Comment #17 - "Three things about Neil Young:" and #41 on "going through the wall".

"Call it blatant mythologizing if you will, but Heart of Gold locks upon the ordinary truth and spirit behind Young’s claim that “it’s a long road behind me,” and it’s something he sings not just for him, but for all of us still travelling."(Vue Weekly by JOSEF BRAUN and PAUL MATWYCHUK

Monterey County Herald | Burnished 'Gold' - A Review Roundup

The Austin Chronicle: Old King: Neil Young and Jonathan Demme in Nashville BY LOUIS BLACK:
"There was so much to these shows. They were rich in music, personality, and meaning, with brilliant new songs, revealing versions of the old ones, terrific and numerous musicians, all swirling around Neil Young at his most inspired. As with the best of Young's music and performances, there were any number of themes both to the new album and the shows. Even though I believe in trusting the art and not the artist, I come back to the autobiographical, not as a way to capture the shows or reduce their meaning, but because in that way they're immediately explosive and then continually unfolding.

When my memory is flickering at the doors of those shows what I see first is always the same and always wrong. I know it's wrong, but maybe it's a vision, if you will, maybe even a greater truth."

No More Marriages!: "Neil Young: Heart of Gold": "Responding to my surprise at the film's strong critical reception ('Univeral Acclaim,' says Metacritic) my roommate joked, 'well, they're all old.' Maybe there's a bit of truth to that: these are songs about middle age, and the album's simplicity does lend itself to projection. But does that make it a good album?"

Jag-Stang.com Discussion :: Neil Young's "tone", sound & gear

Los Angeles Times: "The Soul of Neil Young" by Dan Neil:
"Outside of Woody Guthrie, the Beatles and maybe Bob Dylan, Neil Young is probably responsible for more guitar purchases than anyone in history. Young was an inspiration, proving once and for all that you didn't have to be particularly good at music to be a great musician. That singing-saw voice, that wood-chopping style of hammer-on guitar, the occasional lyric so unvarnished as to splinter into complete weirdness. The blown-out, overdriven raunch of those four-note solos of 'Powderfinger' played on 'Old Black,' Young's battered Gibson Les Paul (got one of those too)."

LW Stevens: "Neil Young's 'Harvest', an album I might characterize without exaggeration as one that opened up the world to me."

Three things about Neil Young:

1) My local used-book/record store didn’t have a tab for Neil Young records. Where his name would’ve been, alphabetically, there was a tab that read “File Under Whiny Canadian.” I always found this far funnier than it is.

very funny

“But too exclusive a focus on vocals leads straight to fascism.”

I think that's a clear reference to FOX's American Idol.

Don't you???

“But too exclusive a focus on vocals leads straight to fascism.”

A reference to FOX's American Idol?

What make of suggesting that the #1 tv program in America is fascist?

The horror. The patriotism. The irony.

But I think there might be something to this emphasis of music for vocal quality over innovation, lyrical content, etc.

Now why would American Idol want to perpetuate "bland, bad" music over groundbreaking styles?

Just asking.
