New Neil Young Album: "Life in War"

Well, we've been sitting on this Neil news for some time now but it looks like the time has come since it's bustin' out all over blog-dale.

The title of Neil Young's newest album will be ~~"Life in War" or possibly~~ "Living With War".

As we reported last month on Neil's SXSW keynote address, Neil has been urged to deliver another "Ohio" -- a song which helped change public attitudes and marked an important turning point in the Vietnam War.

As Harp Magazine's Katherine Silkaitis reports, the album is complete and nearly ready for release. According to film director Jonathan Demme:

“It is a brilliant electric assault, accompanied by a 100-voice choir, on Bush and the war in Iraq…Truly mind blowing. Will be in stores soon.”

According to the blog Last Left Turn Before Hooterville by a member of the 100-voice choir, the album will contain the lyrics: "Let's impeach the President for lyin'!". The album will also feature a rap with President George Bush’s voice set to the choir chanting “flip/flop”. Alicia blogs:

"Every time new lyrics would come up on the screen, there were cheers, tears and applause. It was a spiritual experience ... We finished the session by singing an a cappella version of "America the Beautiful" and there was not a dry eye in the house."

"I've never been at a recording session that was more like being at church. Heck, I've never been to a church that was more like a church than that session."

In another blog by the former president of Reprise Records, Howie Klein's DownWithTyranny!: "The album, with Young on Old Black, Rick Rosas on bass and Chad Cromwell on drums, took three days to finish."

Could this be the predicted swerve to the ditch?

Needless to say, the rusties are in an uproar, with a serious meme that this all an elaborate hoax circulating. Politics and music sometimes do have a slight tendency to make some uncomfortable. But we've been through that a hundred times before ...

And this isn't the first time Neil has been ahead of the curve on impeachment or calling out for the truth (see album cover close-up).

A Warner Bros. Records spokesperson declined to comment on these reports. Why?

"Mildly disappointed with Neil Young's syrupy fall release 'Prairie Wind,' this morning I'm happy (I'd write 'thrilled' or 'overjoyed,' but I'm trying to be more understated) to read that Neil will soon release a hard-rocking protest album called 'Life in War.'

After the sentimental treacle of "Prairie Wind," it's great to read that Neil has recorded "a brilliant electric assault" about Bush and the war. There's a risk that he'll overreach with this, but I hope not. When Neil connects, he hits them out of the park."

UPDATE: 7:26 PM: Neil Young's official website now confirms the album's title as LIVING WITH WAR. Neil's letter appears as ticker at bottom of page. Neil calls it "Metal Folk Protest". Lyrics to "LIVING WITH WAR" are scrolled.

I have photos of him (I collect them where I can) on Corporate Jets flying to award ceremonies, yet he's all about saving the environment! This that Plaion is running on Big Mac Juice or French Fry oil? yeah right!

He owns a huge part of Lionel Trains-think their plastic pollutes? Do they "outsource" to CHinba? they will be soon paying people Union wages to glue coupleing links on a toy train.

All of "Hollywood" is full of shit. Learn a littel history and perhaps they can open thier eyes.

Bush lost all of the goodwill of the world after 9/11, we are now more widely hated and because of Bush's actions (and inaction at home).., the US is LESS safe than before 9/11.

As for unemployment, the pure "numbers" look good but when you look deeper, the new jobs are not paying good wages - families are getting squeezed - the US is facing a crises. I'm not trying to be inflammitory - this is something serious which should be of concern to everyone.

Regarding so-called "principles", Bush recently faced the press and under questioning, exclaimed that based on principles, he would not be making any changes in his staff or cabinet. This past week he has turned over his chief of staff, turned over the White House press secretary, and eliminated Karl Rove's role in policy development and this is just the start. So you see it is not true that Bush doesn't pay attention to the "polls" because he is beginning to throw his staff to the curb. What happened to his "principles"?

Sir, these factual items are not conjecture, they are actually happening. Later today, check out the daily news through reading a paper or other preferred information source - try MSNBC on-line; they do a reasonable job.

Glad to see you finally posted something that has to do with Neil Young.

But, while it does seem off topic, I was wondering what the point of that thing about the MiGs you posted earlier was. With the way you hyped it, I was kind of disappointed. That was just a couple of photos of one of the fighter planes everybody knew all along they had. They only had just under 100 fighter planes by the time of the war, and only about 5 of those MiG-25s and maybe 20 MiG-23s.

So it didn't seem like much of a surprise to me. I guess you know that MiGs aren't WMDs. But maybe you were pointing to that because of what Rummy says at the bottom of that page:

"But, as we all know," he added, "the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."

Maybe he's got a good point there. Maybe there really are some WMDs there - and we just don't have any evidence. And never did.

The thing is, what Rummy, Bush and the rest of his administration were saying before the war was that we had evidence, that we knew where most of those WMDs were, that there were aluminum tubes used for uranium enrichment, that they tried to obtain Uranium in Africa, that they had chemical and biological weapons, that they had unmanned aeriel vehicles which could deliver weapons, and that they had pictures of decontamination trucks.

But we now know that the intelligence which they were given before they said these things said that none of them were true.

We also know that in February 2001, Colin Powell said Hussein "has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. But two years later he tried to persuade the UN Security Council otherwise. They weren't persuaded. And when the U.S. invaded anyway, the Secretary General of the UN called the invasion "illegal".

In May 2003 the administration claimed to have found "biological laboratories". We now know that the team of experts that the DIA had sent to investigate had already unanimously determined them to be merely hydrogen stations for filling weather ballons.

The nice thing about lyrics is that they are often open to different interpretations. But my own view is that all of the above is what Mr. Young likely means by "lying and leading the country into war" and "abusing the power that we gave him" - thought there are also many other things that I'm leaving out.

It's interesting you interpreted "shipping our money out the door" as refering to outsourcing. I was thinking more of the massive deficits, partly due to the cost of the war, but also the huge tax cuts which mostly went to the wealthy.

I also really didn't think of DeLay in reference to the "criminals" line. I was thinking more of Cheney, Rove, Libby, Rumsfeld, etc. - people who actually worked for the President. Of course none of these have been convicted of anything either. Yet.

And I took "bend the facts to fit with their news stories" as a reference to all of those things I mentioned above, but also possibly to the Downing St memo which said "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy." And of course the "news stories" could be a reference to all of those, like Judy Miller of the Times, who published false stories they had been fed by administration sources.

My and my hubby are proud vets from the first gulf war and he again from this quagmire, and yes people like us are the reason we have free speech so we and Neil will not let be in vain so if you'll excuse us and more than half the country while we exercise it, or is it just for support of the President?

Sorry, but contrary to popular belief Republicans DO NOT have the franchise on all of the military.
