The Archives: Live at the Fillmore East

As has been reported recently, the first installment of the legendary Archives is scheduled for November 14, 2006 with Live at the Fillmore East from the March 6, 1970 early show's 2nd half electric set. The first acoustic set is inexplicably missing.

At this time, cover artwork is unavailable (but pre-orders are being accepted), so this would lead us to believe that after waiting 20 years for the successor to Decade this could really be the moment that Neil fans have been waiting on.

Incidentally, the above photo is of the cover of the bootleg LP from Thrasher's Wheat Archives.

Perhaps more interestingly, according to the German fansite Neil Young Info News, the long awaited Archives box set will no longer be in a box format. This comes from a discussion by site editor Jens Severin with the German product manager from Warner,
Achim Kamisli. The first installment of the Archives will be "Live At The Filmore East" with additional installments to follow.

Young has commented in the past that he had found Dylan's bootleg series to be a possible approach to his own archives.

The new CD omits "Cinammon Girl" which appears on many of the widely circulated bootlegs of the soundboard under various titles such as Sunset Cowboy and Live in New York 1969 (sic). There has been speculation as to whether the forthcoming CD is from
early or late shows on March 6 and 7 or whether it is a compilation from the 4 shows.

Let me say, the Fillmore East shows, as the unofficial recordings that circulate attest to, are a fascinating sonic look at Neil Young with an early Crazy Horse lineup. This release could be wonderful news. But these concerts included some great acoustic sets followed by the electric set with CH. An entire show can and should be what is released, not an abbreviated electric set (what, no Cinnamon Girl? Are you kidding?)

If Neil was paying attention to Dylan's Bootleg series releases, he would have noticed that his archivers released complete shows to provide a snapshot at a point in the artist's career. Releasing a partial Neil Young archive show is a big mistake and the fact of it perhaps foretells what the future archive releases will be; incomplete (read edited) looks behind the scenes, not the complete look that Neil has promised in the past.

I'll be first in line to buy this release, but I'm starting to have a bad feeling about the future Neil Young Archive releases.

The real deal has got to be some kind of multi-disc collection that includes the Squires stuff, other live tapes and other things to put everything in context. Perhaps he's doing all that directly through his own Web site, a la Pete Townshend, and leaving the six-song CDs for the label. I don't know. But something's better than nothing, and we've had nothing for a long time.

they are streaming a bunch of things bill graham recorded back in the day.... of which is crazy horse at the fillmore. he also has some zeppelin and a ton of other stuff.

In the last 12 months NY has hinted that their will be performance series starting with the live gig at the Fillmore with CH. There will be a few of these each year. The archives Vol 1 will be 8cd/dvd set for period 63-73 and will include 4 or 5 Squires tracks some BS, live record of solo Riverboat shows in 1966, another solo live show from 1970,as well as whole lot of other previously released and unreleased stuff. Like anything with the archives who knows what the end result will be. Just good to see it has started in some form or another.

(It is a great rehearsal site because you can only get on the base if you work here, and very few, if anybody bothers them while they come and go.) Anyway, Nils was always the last guy to leave the theater, and one day I approached him about signing on of his solo LP's, which he happily did. During the short few minutes I had to speak to him, I told him my fave solo was his on "Speakin' Out" from Tonight's the Night. He thanked me and said, "Oh - Neil just called me the other day to talk about some old concert stuff he is going to release." So here we are, 4 years later.

1) If Neil was a perfectionist, why would he release a butchered up sampler set rather than a proper archive show like Dylan, Hendrix, Springsteen, and others have done? I think he blew it on this one.

2) There's no doubt that the music contained on this release will be fantastic. The frustrating issue is that he could have easily included a full show's worth of great music instead of a paltry 6 songs.

sounds cool and all you losers complaining about the lack of all the songs should go to hell. But I have found some info that I dont think anyone else has found, Neil has "announced" what Archives VOl. 2 is!!!!!!!! Just go on LWW and look at the videos on "Long Walk Home" "Mideast Vacation" and "All Aroung the World" all from 1986. They say "From The Neil Young Archives, Volume 3:", Which means that that probably is VOl 3. Strange time period but hell it will be coll anyway

Certainly looking forward to Danny singing on key with Neil after the truly dissonant Cinncinati Music Hall vinyl I've owned since the mid 1970's. This morning, I noticed a prerelease copy of this on ebay from a UK seller, so this could just be the beginning of a steady steam of archival material. Come on Folks, Don't Spook the Horse!

I tried downloading it through Bitorrent but it crapped out halfway through a couple tries. Needless to say Im pretty psyched to hear this rare version of Crazy Horse do some jams and rare gems. I'm also happy with anything he decides to release because he doesnt owe me anything and knowing him he could walk away from the archives (series?) or any project with no problem. None of it's guaranteed to come out and I'm excited that the ball is finally rolling.

I won't reveal everything on the DVD, so as not to spoil it for those who want a surprise, but the photos of the show and Fillmore period memorobilia are great (including a Fillmore seating chart - I had no idea the place was so big!), and the full-length video of Neil pouring over the photos is really fascinating. neilyoung.com/archives is streaming a clip of it, but the DVD contains a 10+ minute cut. He even discusses a live album he wanted to release at the time comprising the Fillmore and Cellar Door shows from this period!! It may not be the full show, but the incredible sound quality and the DVD extras more than make up for it. I was skeptical at first, but this volume is truly, truly awesome.

No one should feel entitled to what people keep referring to as "the archives". They are "his archives" until he releases them. It reminds me of when I saw Greendale for the first time. When I got up to find another spot towards the end of the classic CH set a fella had the nerve to say, "don't worry, he OWES us about two hours". As if Neil hadn't just put on an incredible show of all new music complete with stage act! A lot of so-called fans don't get it.

It's good stuff, but for the hardcore fan, you probably feel a bit short changed. Neil has a ton of unreleased goods in the "vault" if you will, and one of these days he'll open the doors and let it out.

Another way to look at this is that Neil really doesn't need to release any of his archives. Why should he??? Releasing unreleased old material indicates that you're done making new music.

I don't think Neil's anywhere near done releasing new music. So why in the world release archival artwork?

If time catches up with Neil before it catches up with me, then I'd like to see more of the archives at that point. Until then, keep the new music coming.

I've been listening to the old tunes for years. They're great, but hearing new works like Prairie Wind and Living With War is what makes Neil so compelling an artist.

If there's any one gripe I have with the Fillmore East release, it's that I'd rather see some unreleased songs in the playlist.

Just wait until Push It Over The End, Traces, Ordinary People, etc. finally come out. That's what archives are all about.

I have 2 audience tapes from those shows, and they are excellent - with much funny commentary from Neil directed at the rowdy audience. In March 1970, "Deja Vu" by CSNY was released. This album was a more than $2 million pre-sale album and became one of the best selling albums in 1970. But Neil Young had been playing with Carzy Horse before "Deja Vu" and his rock'n roll with Crazy Horse was completely different from with CSN.

CSN had holiday from Jan 1970 after a long gig, but Neil Young started short U.S. tour with Crazy Horse and Jack Nitzsche. Filmore East was a live performance of one of these stages. Sound is good, as Neil Young approved to release this album as a official one. It is said Neil Young would issue as a box set, but he changed his mind to issue these unreleased tapes like Bob Dylan's "Bootleg Series".

"Come on Baby Let's Go Down Town" on Filmore East might be same recording as one in "Tonight's The Night", I think. Sound is better than "Tonight's The Night".　"Down by the River" more than 12 minutes and "Cowgirl in the Sand" more than 16 minutes are really something.

The stage at this time was with acoustic set by Neil Young and electric set with Carzy Horse. I wonder why no "Cinnamon Girl", which bootlegs of this stage includes and why no acoustic set (it is said tapes of acoustic set is lost. I can't find any bootlegs of acoustic set). 43:19 minutes isn't enough but this is really wonderful live album. I can't believe that this is a recording more than 36 years ago. Hurrah for Neil!

for not releasing of such live clips. such as CSNY concerts never released on VHS or DVD. Very very disappointed.

The sound quality on the DVD is pretty fantastic, but I'm perplexed as to why the bass is so low in the mix. The drums and guitars are real clear but Talbot's levels are way low without much punch. Is it just me?
