Documentary Film of CSNY Freedom of Speech Tour

csny-2006
From Billboard on an upcoming documentary film on Crosby Stills Nash & Young's 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour, David Crosby said:
"You've got to understand this was a pretty controversial tour," he adds, noting that the material from Young's politically strident "Living With War" album tended to have a polarizing effect on the crowds. "We had a lot of people who felt very strongly that we were speaking for them; when we would say the war (in Iraq) was a bad idea, they really, really loved it. There was also a very small minority of very vocal people who would say, 'You can't say that about George!' and get very upset and stomp out."

CSNY's film crew interviewed people from both camps, according to Crosby, as well as soldiers who had been fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. "We brought them to the shows and asked them what they thought about (the war) and also got them to write songs," he reports. "We just talked to a lot of people all over the place about where America is right now, about what the significance is of this polarization that's taken place in this country, what's at stake and how they think it might play out.

"It's pretty critical stuff. We feel like the Constitution is pretty much on the line here, and so the movie, I think, will concern itself with all of those things."

I don't know about the rest of you guys...but I'm rather disappointed in learning that the CSNY movie will be a documentary and not a straight concert film...which I had been hoping for.

I know this was a very controversial tour and all...but the very first official movie with all four members in it is going to be a documentary?

I do have to admit that I am political...and on the Republican side...but I still have both versions of Young's "Living With War" album and saw the guys at their last stop of the '06 tour in Burgettstown.

Here's what I have to say. Each concert was about 3 1/2 hours long. I loved every single song they played at my concert. I was hoping to get just a straight concert film with concert footage of most of the songs they played.

With a documentary we're gonna get less concert footage for more interviews and opinionated stuff which I probably won't want to watch after the first or second viewings. I understand the meaning of this tour and all...but I was mainly hoping to get a concert film.

I honestly don't care about the documentary aspect of it...that's fine with me...but a documentary means less concert footage. Unless the movie is either very long (unlikely) or they release a 2-disc DVD, I know there's not gonna be all the songs that I would like to see...which makes me regret not sneaking my video camera into my concert to just film it for myself.

Oh and I don't want anyone to think I'm a prick and being selfish or anything...I love these guys and what they're all about...but I was just saying I had heard it was gonna be a concert film and had my hopes up...but hey...that's not saying it's still not gonna be great!

I know if it's a theatrical release I'll be seeing it in theaters...I just hope it comes close to home.

Regarding the comment about a straight concert film, it wouldn't work at 3 1/2 hours. Certainly not theatrically.

The DVD will probably contain a full concert tho. Let's hope. That would be a tasty bonus

More than likely this documentary of sorts will be a fair mix of interviews and songs, as this tour was definitely much more about the message than a nostalgic reunification.

I'll go out on a limb and say no more than 12 songs will probably appear on this DVD, possibly even less. Many of the classic CSNY songs (at least the ones I heard in Concord) were a little messy because Stills and Nash are both becoming very weak in the vocals department, and even in the interview below you can hear Stills normal speaking voice has definitely suffered over the years, and probably his mind too from the sounds of it. On some of his songs the new harsh, raspy bluesy sound his voice mimics works well, but usually only on faster paced pieces without vocal harmonies.

Graham Nash was past his hayday many years ago, his sweet and soft British-tinged tone is all but gone, and he's only useful for harmonies, even then he's the weakest link in the group quite obviously.

I imagine David Crosby, despite his excellent solo performances on a few songs, will probably get almost no attention at all.

The DVD will probably include about half of Living With War's songs or more, and a guarantee on Ohio, Find the Cost of Freedom, For What It's Worth, and Rockin' in the Free World.

Most of the interviews will probably be re-hashed, though I'm sure there will be a good chunk of new material to go along with them, as well as some decent behind-the-scenes kind of stuff. I don't know if this will be a real Shakey Pictures film, if so, I expect much better than what I'm predicting here, but more than likely it will be a pretty slapstick production.

Neil definitely had a great renaissance period from Broken Arrow to Prairie Wind, but Living With War never quite caught me as the "next step" as his career winds down. Obviously its social and political importance cannot be understated, and I love the fact that someone is willing to make a stand here, and Neil did make a great album in the process. It struck me as a sacrifice of some of the art aspect in order to get the message out, because the message was more important.

Regardless, I will probably buy this DVD anyways, if only because there will probably be a few hidden gems stashed inside (hopefully).

Anyone accusing Neil of selling out. Do your homework, read the biography (Shakey) then if you still think he's selling out, go back to school and learn English comprehension.

Neil selling out? Wow...here's a guy that has always been at the cusp of what the fans and music industry is about. If you don;t like it, don't buy it, period! To say he's a sellout is just utterly insipid and uninformed!
