I live in England and watched the interview on Saturday and was bitterly dissapointed. As we all know, Neil Young interviews don't exactly happen every week so I was really looking forward to it. But it just turned out to be some guy who even said he'd only been a fan of Neil's since the Heart of Gold movie and they only showed four questions in what can't have been much more than a five minute slot.
Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris on the other hand, both had an entire evening on BBC4 dedicated to them on Friday and Sunday. VERY DISSAPOINTING!

I caught the programme on Sunday morning on catch up TV and was disappointed as well. It was clear that the interview had been heavily edited and gave no sense of the development of discussion in real time. This could be seen at the end of the programme when they showed some out takes of the whole programme and the had a very short clip of Neil playing a ukele but then saying it was out of tune!

I have no beef with Mark Kermode though, I'm not sure I'd have done any better. Kermode is an acclaimed film critic and is very incisive and caustic if needed. He also raves about what he likes. So when he reviewed HOG I was expecting a complete and utter slagging off of it, but he was genuinely apologetic about his previous views of Neil's complete back catalogue. HOG had struck him in a way that he just hadn't expected and he was honest enough to say this live on BBC Radio 5. He has also reecieved a lot of good hearted leg-pulling from presenter Simon Mayo who has liked Neil since way back.

Neil's body language was interesting when Kermode told him he was a recent convert and had to tell his story, Neil was leaning as far away as possible. Think about it, this is what Neil would probably do if the vast majority of us came into contact with him. Think about some more, have you ever been told you're great by someone you don't know? It's a very uncomfortable experience. You know you should be gracious but you want to run like hell!

Anyway, Neil seemed to relax much more when Kermode discussed film making with him. Kermode is on his subject, Neil is being stretched. It made for an interesting few seconds.
