Deja Vu Film

deja-vu-film-poster-sm.jpg

Neil Young's "CSNY: Deja Vu" documentary film of the 2006 Freedom of Speech tour will be the last film of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 25.

From N Y Times:
"During the tour, the CSNY band traveled with Mike Cerre, an 'embedded' correspondent who has been to Iraq and Afghanistan 5 times in the current 'War on Terror.'

Cerre and his crew captured the reactions of America during the moments before the 2006 elections, just as the nation was beginning to 'turn' against the war and the administration that started it. The internal conflict of Americans struggling to come to grips with the reality of the war and the right to speak out against it or in support of it is documented with raw footage of a country at odds with itself and in mid-change."

From Sundance Film Festival program guide:

deja-vu-film-csny.jpg
"If you grew up, as I did, with your dorm room full of albums by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and antiwar activities as part of your daily agenda, you may approach the Freedom of Speech Tour with preconceptions about its motivations and content based on the band you remember. Although the chronicle of that tour, CSNY Déjà Vu, is indeed a look back at the politics and anti–Vietnam War sentiment, its real value lies in its rejection of simple nostalgia and its ability to focus on the present day.

As both a portrait of a band and an examination of artistic process, CSNY Déjà Vu is filmmaking that is self-centered, yet fresh and critical. Today’s generation must be as tired of hearing about the ’60s as we were of an earlier era, and this depiction of the tour is anything but preaching to the converted. Part performance, part commentary, and very much a call for activism, CSNY Déjà Vu is relevant because we ignore the lessons of history at our peril.

Featuring music from Neil Young’s controversial Living with War CD, this evocative and edgy film documents reactions from fans to a band that has remained committed to issues of politics and art for more than four decades. Since history seems to repeat itself, perhaps our artists best illustrate what we need to remember."

Just saw this last night. I think I'll buy one. I'm so excited for this movie! Hope it comes to a theater near me so I can see it with my dad once and then a few other times with different friends haha.

Come on - isn't anybody going to comment on the choice of photos? Can't argue with Crosby and Stills from the early 70s and Nash and Young from last year...

See you at Sundance!

I'll comment on the choice of photos. What was most striking to me was Neil's prominent position in the whole poster with Crosby & Stills looking up to Neil in some sort of Orwellian-Citizen Kane dominant character. Am I off base?

Fantastic looking poster for what I'm sure will be a fantastic film. Really looking forward to its release, hope we get plenty of opportunities to see it here in England!

Haha I don't blame them for thinking Crosby and Stills weren't photogenic enough to be on the poster.

And what's this "A Film by Neil Young" business? Did Bernard Shakey get sick or something?

I like the poster. Since the film refects on the 70's era and today, I like how it show's Crosby and Stills from the 70's and Nash and Young from today. It also goes in order, which is kinda stupid but I liked it, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

And "A Film By Neil Young" might be because not enough people (besides us Rusties and music film fans) know who Bernard Shakey is and maybe Neil wants people to say "hey, Neil Young made an official movie!" haha I don't know, that's kinda stupid. But anyways, it does say "Directed by Bernard Shakey" at the bottom.

Anyway, can't wait for this film and hope it comes close to home!

Does anyone know, if it is possible, to buy the Deja Vu Film Poster?

Can't wait to see this. Caught the Fresno show. I bet it'll be a powerful motivating film. And I really hope a lot of young folks see this. Maybe they'll learn that individuals can make a differnce and help get this country back on track before it's really too late.

I agree. Everyone should thank CSNY that the war is over and Afghanistan is now a peaceful place. The tour saved so many!!

Perhaps Shakey is for the "artistic" works, and Neil Young is for the truth stuff.

and, yes, many will consider that this movie is well behind the times since Iraq is now staggeringly peaceful and people can walk around and buy soap from street vendors and what-not; however, the thin veneer or peace can barely conceal the bubbling cauldron -- and we are 4,000 dead and $1 trillion poorer to show for it.

Keep on rocking in the Free World!

If this film can bring the troops home even just one day sooner, than it will be worth the grief that CSNY will probably get when it's released.

I am tired of getting the political non-realities of FOX, CNN, and politicians' spins. CSNY Deja Vu nails it!

I'm still living with war in my heart every day. Can't wait to see this movie.

Whatever you do, don't vote for a candidate who gave G.W.B. authority and a blank check to go to war in Iraq. Vote Obama. Or Edwards.

Methinks that poster was designed in-house, I mean in-ranch. It says, you're (C&S) then, I'm now, I'm active, you're passive, I'm above, you're below, I'm the focus of this design, you support that focus, you're looking to me, I'm snarling at my guitar...and Nash is just generally blown away by me. It is all true of course, but it seems he could have been a bit more sensitive.
