Copenhagen, Denmark - 2/28 & 2/29/08: Concert Reports

From Copenhagen concert reviews:
”Some concert experiences stick to the memory and are never forgotten. Where everything comes together, and even the seasoned listener is trembling as if it were the first time. As if music were something that was invented right there, on the spot. That was Neil Young's concert at Falkoner Centret.”
– Torben Holleufer, GAFFA

”The 62-year-old Canadian and his band delivered a feat of strength which this critic has never seen or heard anything like before. Throughout the concert Neil Young excelled in changing from vulnerable and thoughtful storyteller to a roaring, rocking dinosaur. A combination that really captures the essence of Neil Young's back catalogue.”
– Ditte Sig Kramer, Soundvenue

2. row. My girlfriend on one side, my dad on the other, and Neil so close i could almost reach out and touch him. After a nice session with Pegi, Neil came on hiding behind a painting as he entered the stage. Sat down and and played 'From Hank to Hendrix' so emotionally og powerfully that i got a lump in my throat and almost startet crying(partly because it was so unreal being so close to where it actually happens). Next it was ambulance blues. I can only describe it as an out-of-body experience. As one of my favorite songs ever, the way he played it made me forget time and space, and i could have sworn he was looking at me several times(my girlfriend later told me he was looking at her!:)). He then whent on and played song after song, with such power and 'realness' that the lump in my throat became a part of me. The first set ended with 'cowgirl in the sand', where he played the classic chords in new ways, as if he whanted to show us(me??), that the spirit of his music still lives on and never stops evolving.
The second set opended with a powerful version of 'Mr. Soul', again mindblowing beond words. Without going into details of my almost relegious experience on every note, my highlights of the second set, was 'Down By the River','Spirit Road' and the encore 'Cinnamon Girl'. The first contained the alltime classic one-note solo and then took of from there, where Neil lost track of himself and became the music he was playing. 'Spirit Road' lasted about 25 min.(allthough no feeling of time was present), and Neil lifted the curtains of the material world and gave us a glimse of something else, with the sound and pure energy that seemed to flow from him in to old black, and out trough the speakers. This was the greates music and artistic experience of my life so far, but it did'nt end there. After the show i came upon a small group of people, waiting behind stagebuilding where the busses were parked. Standing there with my girl for about 45 min. i saw a lot of the stagecrew come and go. Suddenly the band came out and Neil and Pegi followed. As the group of people cirkeled Neil, i asked Pegi for an autographnd thanked her for an amazing show. She was very forthcoming and thanked me back while singning my program i bought in the merchandice store. Then Neil started calling for Pegi and started to go, and i just had time to get his autograph and thank him for the show before they whent on into the bus. I CANT BELIVE I GOT HIS AUTOGRAPH! I love you Neil...I am still high on the whole experience from the concert and getting to meet Neil and Pegi.

Great show, here are some thoughts. Ambulance blues for sure is one of the highlights of all the shows I've seen with Neil.
His voice is incredible, as is his piano playing.
When Hitchhiker was requested he said "I can't remember Hitchhiker, I'll have to Google it" So maybe tonight you are lucky...
After finishing "Don't let it bring you down he" said "I screw that one up, did't play the first verse and did one verse two times. I'll guess I have to play the first verse, and if I screw THIS one up..." Then he did the first verse. Fabulous
Did Ben Keith move a single step when he was playing guitar?
Larry Craigh played guitar on one of Peggis songs.
The thunder and lightning he gets out of Old Black is incredible.
It's a 4 hour show, including Peggis set, and intermissions!

Thursday night show: One of the best Neil Young-shows I have ever seen. My only regret now is that I didn´t buy a ticket for the show tonight too.
Lucky You who have tickets for the upcoming European concerts.

Saved, again. Neil Young in Copenhagen. I just wanted to shout "Thank you, Neil" all the way through. I have known it since I first heard his voice in "Helpless" as a part of a soundtrack to a movioe called "Strawberry Statement" in the early seventies that the world´s best grounded artist, Neil Young, is a channel for higher powers. Later on, in 82, I met him in private, and he was just so calm og nice and the answer to anybody´s dream of a living icon. Yesterday in Copenhagen, he even cheated by not playing two of my absolute gratest, "Journey through the past" and "Mellow my Mind", though they are often on the setlist on this tour, but who cares? All that glitters is gold in this night with Neil. This is not a show, not a concert, this is a state of mind, this is Neil painting his picture of life as the van Gogh of rock, he certainly is. This is Neil trying to help us get on the "Spirit Road". So unlike any other artist, it is a spiritual process, he is inviting us into. I was right in front of the stage, when he and the band ended with "Keep on rockin´ in the free world". A great, satisfied smile was on his face, when he suddenly ran (i.e.: ran!) through his stage-museum out in the wing on the rater tiny Falkoner-stage to prevent the bandmembers from leaving, as he wanted to play "The Sultan" as an extra encore for the most wonderful audience, I have ever been a part of in Denmark. Being a Ragland-aficionado means LOVE. Now, he has left for Great Britain and once again he is out of my track, and today I feel abstinent and left behind. I did not shout THANK YOU, NEIL! yesterday, but gratitude is my only feeling right now. How deeply an artist can create a soundtrack that interferes with every aspect of your whole life, is amazing. Stay true, keep fighting, old Blackie screams... Pax et bonum.

.... when someone in the audience in Copenhagen second night requested "Trasher", Neil replied: "I don´t like that song...... it´s too sad". Today, I just saw it again from the Cow Palace ´78-dvd, and it is of course still a magnificent song... Lucky you in Edinburg.

The song after the "Thrasher"- comment was "Love Art Blues". And there he sang the lines "My songs are all so long And my words are all so sad".

I just listened on Rustradio to this magnificient show. Interestingly, in "A Man Needs A Maid" Neil changed the lyrics from "To give a love, you gotta live a love. / To live a love, you gotta be "part of"." to: "To live a love, you gotta give a love. / To give a love, you gotta be "part of"." Interesting change.

Does anybody know whether this is new? (I was in Amsterdam III but cannot remember.)
