London, England - 3/8 & 9/08: Concert Reports

Other highlights for me were Down by the River, Winterlong, and No Hidden Path. Pegi's set was very enjoyable too.

His command over his music is awesome, it realy leaves you speechless. A word to the crew - great job, you contribute to making the whole experience unforgettable. To those going tonight - forget the cellphones and cameras, just sit on the edge of your seat and take it all in.

At 3/09/2008 06:24:00 AM, The Governor said...: Saw Neil last Wednesday and was hoping to maybe hear a different selection of songs.....and what a selection he chose for this performance.... 14 absolute gems were within the accoustic set.

The highlights for me were 'Ambulance Blues' and 'A Man Needs A Maid'...............
after Neil had finished 'A Man...', he remained seated at the piano, and played 'Flying On The Ground' followed by 'On The Way Home'!!!!
Neil has only played 'Flying..'
live once before this century!!.

Also, only the 8th time this century , he has played 'On The Way Home' live.

This was indeed a treat.

Again he kicked off the electric set with 'Mr Soul'....possibly better than Wednesday's rendition.

The highlights were a smouldering 'Down By The River', which Neil seemed to extend by an extra 5 minutes , and 'No Hidden Path'....in which he wrestles with Old Black again and again, each refusing to submit until the last note is played.

If there was a disappointment, it was the encore..'Roll Another Number', which just could not compare with Wednesday's encores.

Oh well I still have tickets for his last 2 nights in London....should be good!!

Too many highlights to mention - churlish to mention also being slightly disappointed with the encore but we still got to see more songs than the previous two shows!

Now desperately seeing if I can grab a ticket for next Saturday.

As far as I am concerned every single song would have been worth the admission price alone but, despite the fact that every single minute was brilliant, the highlight for me had to be Down by the River, especially the way he belted out the chorus and the way he played Old Black, the man in SIXTY TWO for christ's sake!
Really pleased with the cheer that the whole band got, but especially Ben Keith, thoroughly deserved, what an amazing legendary musician.
However, what was otherwise a perfect evening came close to being spoilt by the number of people who came in late and took forever to find their seats and then some idiots who persisted in yelling out rubbish between virtually every song. Also, maybe there were a few to many "Part time" Neil fans there, judging by the difference in reception that Heart of Gold and Old Man got as opposed to, say, Journey Through the Past. But never mind, I certainly wasn't going to let them ruin it for me!
As for Pegi, whilst I thought her songs were perhaps a bit dull and repetitive, she certainly can sing and this is definately where her strength lies.
Thanks for the best night of my life Neil, if you could see your way back to England soon that would be great, as an 18 year old srudent I fear I may be stretching my resources somewhat if I treid to got to Europe this summer!

At 3/09/2008 12:41:00 PM, The Loner said...: I have just arrived Oslo after a short visit to London to see Neil 3/8. Unfortunately he will not be playing in Norway on this tour. I really loved this setting. The venue was great and the accustic set without weaknesses. Before this tour I never thought I would get to hear songs like Mellow My Mind, Journey Through the Past and Ambulance Blues live. I have never experienced Neil playing any of the songs on the accustic show live before! Highlights of the electric set were Down By the River, My, My, Hey, Hey, Spirit Road and No Hidden Path. I think I have heard Powderfinger played better before and I am not a big fan of the electic version of Too Far Gone, though. I could also have dreamed of songs like Rockin' in the Free World and Like a Hurricane, but that could have disturbed the dynamic of the show, and anyhow I have seen him playing them before. After all a fantastic show, to me maybe only topped by the concert on Kalvøya, Oslo in 1993.....or maybe not!

Im trying to go down for either Friday or Sat next week as i enjoyed it so much. Does anyone know the best way of getting tickets or how much the touts were selling them for? Thanls

The concert totally blew my mind, must have been one of the best things I've been to in my whole life. The highlight was definitely Down By The River. Overwhelming! Wish I had tickets for next weekend as well, but I really can't afford another 150 pound ticket.
Oh man, I have no words. What an amazing night.

Difficult to pick out highlights, it was all brilliant. A Man Needs a maid was spellbinding, Journey Through the Past was gorgeous, On the Way Home was an awesome surprise, Down by the River was coruscating, Winterlong was truly moving, and Powderfinger was majestic. I think the kids are now fans for life! Slightly disappointed that the encore was truncated to Roll Another Number, but you can't have everything! The crowd was a little annoying at times. Someone shouted "talk to us Neil", to which Neil deadpanned "I truly appreciate these meaningful silences between us".

Am sure the rest of the band were ready for a second track before Neil gestured them all onstage for the final bow. Still a cracking night though; the acoustic set was stunning!

Neil cracked a fingernail in his pick/strumming hand 1/2-way through electric set, checking it several times and eventually having a plaster/bandage of some sort applied by a stage hand twice. This cut (ehem) into his ferocity of playing, but of course didn't diminish his energy or power. Also, he seemed quite chatty at various points commenting several times that "things are going down hill", another time explaining he is helping to develop a hyper-efficient car and another time apeing that he "always has his nails done" when receiving the finger aide. Well done Neil - you do give us hope.

Highights for me The Loner what a great opener that was.. hey hey my my, After the Gold Rush, Needle and the Damage Done and of course Down by the river. The new songs sound like classics already i mean the last one No Hidden Path was about 20mins of sheer brilliant guitar induldance. Spirit rd and dirty old man were great too. They say Clapton is (was) god but that sure is wrong.. Neil is God! he's an absoulte master craftsman.Thanks Neil.

Sure, it would have been lovely to hear 'Cortez' and 'Like a H' but then again it never felt like a greatest hits show, so we did more than fine as it was. I thought 'Roll Another Number' was a fab ending - off into the night from Tonight's the Night: brilliant.

Only marred by the Geordie bloke and his Welsh lady friend standing at the back of the circle talking through most of both sets. They only shut up when one of them went for a smoke or a beer, he then complained at the songs he missed! Let's hope they don't breed!
