Believe it or not, this looks it's already up on Dime - and not just a couple of cuts either.

BTW - Day in the Life is one of the tracks broadcast.

McLuhan was right - we are in the global village

To the first post: Yes, Marshall McLuhan was right. And we know it since everything is so fast available. A new and addictive way of preparing yourself for a rock concert. It for sure gets more exciting this way, but did McLuhan say something about the advertising and commercial breaks in this new global village? I don’t think he could see it would be such a commercial hell at this present time. Here’s the set list plus the info about the broadcasting. B.S.M.

Please forgive the people from Madrid. They probably will not be able to write a review for the next seven years. They were blown away yesterday. I still haven't seen the video's but did see some pictures. This guy looked like he was was a billion percent concentration on the pics. Probably because he knew it was broadcasted live.
Did anyone see the video's yet???

After viewing only one song on YouTube I really don't think we need a review of the Madrid concert!

This video speaks for itself.
Holy Shit, that guy rocks!

Because Sound Matters

And let's not forget that Rock in Rio was a festival gig, so the audience is propably currently listening some other great shows and not writing reviews on computer :) But I'm also waiting for the youtube clips, hey hey, my my was awesome. I'm seeing Neil at Roskilde after one week and then later at Helsinki! I surely can't wait.

I was last night in Madrid, and that was an amazing experience again, was back 2004 in Los Angeles at the Greek Auth., and this is was very different. Completely electrid this man, he managed the band as a lion!! Furious faces, incredible!! Just got a plane from Madrid to Tenerife 3 hours later than the concert, this one finished at 3am. what a incredible night. By the way where can I get the video, I know it was broadcasted. Now on tv they are showing more concerts

Please someone put more videos on youtube :D

I saw Neil in Milan in february and i'll see him again in Portugal 12 july.

There is a rumor that will be another concert in Portugal in 14 july, can someone confirm this?

I was in Madrid yesterday and it was a great concert. As some of you said, he was really concentrated and looked eager to give everything he had. The festival itself is more of a commercial centre than a musical spectacle and after so many hours (and in a specially hot evening of a working day) people was a bit tired, but Neil managed to get over it and created a magic atmosphere. The acoustic part -from 'Too Far Gone' to 'Heart of Gold' was simply fantastic, it is impossible to sound more personal, passionate and heart-wrecking. As always, 'The Needle and...' was really touching and he played the organ in 'Mother Earth'. On the 'rockest songs', his guitar solos were as furious as they can be, with 'Words' and 'Hidden Path' being the best exemples. This last song lasted more than 25 minutes, and since the audience was very heterogeneous (as the groups playing yesterday are), it was too much time for a small part of it and some people looked bored at a given moment. 'Hey Hey My My' and the first three songs, played at a fast pace without a second to breath, were other highlights. He seemed to really appreciate the support of the fans when he came back for the bis, and looked proud on his performance. All in all, it was for sure a spectacular show, and probably the best concert I have ever attended. Sorry for not giving more details, but my English leaves a lot to desire.

i´m spanish but i´ll try some english. Rock in rio is like watching concerts in a comercial gallery. In the words "rock in Rio", the only truth lies in "in", ´cause this festival is very "In" but it´s not in Rio and sure it´s not about Rock. In this scenery Neil came out smiling and apparently happy. He said "welcome to Rio" and, suddenly, like someone had pushed the "play" button, sounds the band rocking as hellhounds. The volumen was not low, but very low. Rock in Rio.

1 Mr. Soul.great opener. fast and electric as rockpalast. people singing. (TV – with commercial))
2 I've Been Waiting For You. this one is greater than what we usually remember. takes you to the sixties. very good. (TV - f*cking commercial in the middle)
3 Cinnamon Girl. unexpected. strong and perfect. (TV)
4 Spirit Road (Not on TV - 9 minute commercial,). impressive. people singalong and first signs of alien life in Neil´s frets.
5 Love And Only Love (TV - incomplete - started already when back to show). the bomb explodes. this one goes on in crescendo. Neil´s solos are nowadays lazier but deeper in a away. The crescendo went very very high and occasional audience realised what was all about but stayed hiptonized. many people already new about the answering singalong in the very end. community.
6 Hey Hey, My My (TV). with only the first note people shouted. another good one.
7 Too Far Gone (Not on TV - Commercial cut). electric version. perfect. this band can play anythin g like absolute masters do.
8 Oh, Lonesome Me (TV – but incomplete - started when back to show). not a good choice for me. i never enjoyed this one but sounds great.
9 Mother Earth (TV). on the pump organ with harmonica. NO ONE SAID A SINGLE WORD DURING THIS ONE. The whole prairie was like abducted. You could see teenagers who don´t event know Little Richard with their open mouths.
10 The Needle And The Damage Done (TV) Neil Alone. You know.
11 Old Man (TV). another peak. sounds like in the Heart of gold movie with the vocals and so on. first signs of eternal life in Keith´s Steel guitar.
12 Heart Of Gold (TV). everybody singing/shouting. I would like to listen to this one when he plays it.
13 Get Back To The Country (Not on TV - Commercial cut). i think there was Anthony Crawford on Telecaster on this one. this is a real rock and roll number. sounds rocking and powerful almost like an AC/DC´s number.
14 Words (TV – But incomplete). no words.
All right. Neil takes out the great white GRetsch wich sounds EXACTLY like those great old solos not played with the Old Black.the version of Words I saw last night is one of the best Neil Young live performances I´ve taken notice. I have seen Crazy Horse and this is absolutely out of reach for them: the rhytmn kept warm, the piano sounding like the fucking lp but in front of you with the guys playing, the solos and, above them all, the amazing and chilling pedal steel sliding up and down your spine. scandalous.
15 No Hidden Path (TV). 26 minutes acording to the tv broadcaster. in the end there was a non melodic solo, just furious noise with distorsion at 10 in every channel. crazy and sick. lovely and magic.
16 A Day In The Life (TV)well, a must see. very strange but i will never forget it. neil plays and sings the original recording note by note but sounds dark, electric, strong and frightening. noisy end with broken strings.

the band played some mistakes, but you could feel big concentration on them and Neil is angry from time to time due to technical shit. Maybe just a mania as i read from other shows. his mood: happy, concentrated, no talking with the audience.his playing: the opposite of "dissapointing", i don´t know the word.

For those eager ones that can't wait, the stream of the Madrid show can be seen here:
http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/la2/ultimos/dia-1.html?page=2

I'm not sure if the link works directly but there should be rock in rio thumbnail on the left side.

First there is some spanish introductions but the show will start after a while. The skipping doesn't work well but who wants to skip Neil anyway :) This is awesome!!

The link seems to be too long here, so it needs some work to do, copypaste the next two lines to a single line on your browsers address bar:

http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/la2
/ultimos/dia-1.html?page=2

I hope it works, have fun!!

Thank for the link. And to the review above: Great Review! Thanks a lot.

"AHH, damn PAL. That shit takes like a day to transcode." Yeah, how unfair that a European show would be broadcast using the European system and not the American one. After all, we all know that America is the centre of the universe...

At 6/29/2008 06:39:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Americans. Forget the download, PAL or not, you can see the whole thing here:

http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/la2
/ultimos/dia-1.html?page=2

There's only a five minute Spanish introduction.

And from the previous review:
14 Words (TV – But incomplete). no words.
I completely agree with this one. Amazing!!!!!!

15 No Hidden Path - crazy and sick. lovely and magic. Super!!!!!! It gets better every day. Can you believe this? B.S.M.

Hey,

Just watched the show on TVE. Was in Lyon two days earlier and posted a review. I stand by my impression that Neil became pissed off around Unknown Legend in Lyon and it changed the energy of the gig.

Anyone with no time to watch the whole of this broadcast have a peak at around 104' when he starts pogoing in circles to his NHP solo! Priceless! He really gave his all to this one, how lucky that it was preserved for posterity. Shame about Too Far Gone which was a treat in Lyon, and also the mutilating of Love and Only Love, but hey, we rarely get anything that good by way of Neil concert videos!

Someone copy all this before TVE takes it down!

i don't know what the hell everybody is smoking...must not be weed. I sat down and watched the entire broadcast of Neil's Rock In Rio concert...and after seeing every video he's put out with crazy horse and all his other bands, I can EASILY say that this was his most intense, inspiring, rocking, just fu**ing incredible performance I've EVER seen him put on. I can't say enough great things about it. No Hidden Path was easily some of the greatest music I've ever heard. The extended solos and everything were absolutely amazing.

There really are no Words to describe how lucky all of us are to have an artist like Neil Young. He is 62 years old and I'm starting to believe that he has more energy than his whole fan base combined.

If you are a fan of Neil's in any way, shape or form...please watch the broadcast of the Rio show before they take it offline. It gave me a whole new deep respect and admiration for him. Trust me.

WHAT A CRIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still recovering from the intense sensation that Neil's rock in rio concert caused to me, which was due to several reasons:
The main one is that he was awesome, and it seemed to me that he did his best to be that way, which is in deep connection with what I experienced among Madrid audience: a magic feeling rocked by his music, and it was a fantastic combination of attitudes between musician and people where "words" weren't necessary at all, except for the incredible song with this title.
I didn't really expect (even though I wished it) that such a fantastic feeling was going to be created and float in the air (I didn't feel the same in his '87 concert, the only one that we had in Madrid before), and I'm very happy to have seen a so comfortable Neil here, because this can mean that maybe we’ll have him back again in a not very long time (I wish so)
I only have to add one thing again (the same one that I wrote when I returned from his London concert last 15th march):
"Thanks for all, Neil, and the great spirit bless you".
Rosa
