Surprising start with a hard rocking "Powderfinger", and two firsts for this tour: "Down by the river" (a blistering 15 minute-version) and "For the turnstiles" in a great electric version.

Strange crowd though, average age seemed to be near 65, all there to sing along with "Heart of gold", and to get lots of beer when Neil was soloing away on his electric guitar....

The venue (a nice sports park) was far from sold out btw....

it was pouring rain during the preview act but as expected fron Meil, the heavens cleared and a nice cool night followed. No rain!

Powderfinger and Mr Soul opened the act so you knew what you were in for. I dont remember the entire set list but a couple of other songs i hadnt heard in the winter shows included Mother Earth and for the turn stiles. LArry cane out to play Sitar on Old man. Really nice Needle and the Damage Done.

No Hidden Path kicked ass. This was highlight in winter and Neil didnt dissapoint. Wasnt as long as some of the other shwes....but it kicked ass. Thast old man can play a guitar.

Finale was Day in the life. It was absoutely awsome. I have a 7min video of it i'll post on my blog...see below. It is just CRAZY....with the guitar strings flailing around at the end.

Following Tom's comment, crowd was a bit strange and some jack ass kept going for beers and pushing back thru the crowd (we were right center about 10 from the stage...packed in). Hard to understand the need for 6 beers during the show.

All in all show was a 9 out of 10. (Amsterdam Feb show set the bar for me.!)

On the way out, I passed this old 1957 Caddilac which for southern Holland just seems so out of place. It was really cool looking with the tail fins and all. In the back window was a sticker that looked as old as the car that said..."I'd rather be at a neil young show."

I had my, (before) somewhat 'it's not my thing' son with me but when i turned my head during the last part of the show I saw him standing there...eyes gazing in awe, mysterious smile on his face... When we drove home (after) he mentioned that 'he never knew...' Still, the county-rock (unknown legend, back to the country, heart of gold and even old man) he still doesnt fancy that. Oh well...
I loved the attempted drama on the stage, with Ben changing guitars, Neil changing guitars and when Larry ran out to 'save' Old Black after Down by the river (i think it was) before it got trashed anyhow in the end...
And no hidden path... i mean... simple old fashined WOW! Takes a while to grasp that...
It was such a great show, it was well worth the long drive home afterwards with the music still ringing in my ears...What a great night!

More and more I get impressed by his style: Is it country? Is it Grunge? Are his songs pure lovesongs? For me: It is every time fantastic to see and hear him. The last time is always the best time.

Unfortunately some people in the crowd were unable to just watch and enjoy the music. Why they needed to push their way through real fans to get their beers is not clear to me, but it was irritating.
Great show indeed, with some surprises like Down by the River and a magnificent electric version of For the Turnstiles.
No hidden Path has become a classic like Cortez, Like a Hurricane,...
Words is just an awesome song.

At 7/13/2008 01:20:00 PM, Anonymous said...: Ralph, IMHO one the things that truly makes Neil great is it doesn't matter what he plays, if you drop your expectations and forget about hearing hit songs, you might discover that the best thing for him to play is whatever he's in the mood to play because he'll breath new life into it and take it to awesome heights ... when he's playing things like 'Words', 'Time Fades Away" Turnstiles, ect ... the thing to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the show

My (second!!) owner is in fact born in 1957 and he hopes that I may run as long as he does. Great concert in my backyard. I only had to do some 20 miles or so. Wanna say hi? Seems to have been due to the fact PinkPop was already fully booked. Smeets, himself a Young-fan, got a backstage pass which he used for one song.

Only 8.000 people attended (total capacity of 12.000). Also, Bos Pop payed the sum of 750.000 euro for Neil, may be the highest in the history of the festival. Neil, according to ANP, had all kinds of wishes to boot, e.g. no flash lights, no camera's etc.

Rumor has it that NY will play PinkPop next year. For sure I didn't believe the rumor because one year is a long time. But now since Jan Smeets of PinkPop was there and turned out to be a big fan... it might be possible. Maybe Neil will tour Europe again next summer. Besides that this is only one half of the rumors..... He will play PinkPop with another famous act... a guy named Zimmerman... yeah, yeah, rumors... I will write a review when time is available... B.S.M.

Covering other artists' classics is a long tradition. It's the ultimate compliment. Neil channeled the orignal emotion of the song and truly made it his own.

Perhaps Paul will do Sugar Mountain some day? Heh heh.

It starts with a list of persons who have played on Bospop before: Sting, Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams. "We have had many legends on stage, but not someone with the stature of Neil Young before".
Weert prepares itself for the greatest act ever on Bospop - more light & sound equipment.
In the nearby changing rooms of the sportsclub are the rooms of the lesser gods; in number 4 are the demands a bit more specific; "more dimmed lights, there where more requirements for the lights so we had to get some lamps". Neil is epileptic and doesn't like fluorescent lights. (this gets repeated in some other wording).

But that's not all, there is a bed, special tea, his own piano, hats, blouses and shoes. And because Neil is an environment-freak a lot of things aren't allowed in the dressing room. "He had as a requirement no plastic in the dressing room, no plastic cups, no plastic water cooler, and so on."

On the stage itself a lot of old equipment of the man himself, it's a big logistic operation. "For this show he brought three trucks with him for material and that's a lot for a band".

What does it cost to have such a man on stage, "The costs are enormous, but I am not going to mention figures". On the question if he is the most expensive artist ever, the man acknowledges that. The reporter says that several hundred thousands euros.
