Triniman's Blog: Concert Review: Neil Young w/ Death Cab For Cutie & Everest, MTS Centre, Winnipeg, MB, 10/16/2008:
"Young was stunning on guitar and managed to coax extended solos out of the song. His playing was characterized with monstrous riffs, rapidly flying fingers and tons of cranking of the whammy bar. I have seen many bands this year, but Neil Young is among the most violent attacker of strings that I have seen. He is also a master improviser, making every electric song a sonic and visual spectacle. There's absolutely no one quite like Neil Young."

Encore: A Day In The Life

Overall, a fantastic concert. There was TONS of energy on the floor with everybody singing along, Neil put on a fantastic show, promised he'd write his own review for the concert and send it into the paper, and the crowd was glad to have Neil back in Winnipeg.

Last night was too wonderful for words. A very emotional experience for me- pure joy.
I am very thankful to Neil for so many years of beautiful music.
I was probably the only middle aged lady who choked up during Cortez but when Neil let loose on that one it was magic.

One of the most special concerts ever. My eyes were fixed in wonder. I am only 23 years old, but I appreciate what Neil Young has done for grunge/rock/folk and still appreciate the music he creates today. The setlist, after quite a dissapointing one for CSNY, was amazing, really awe inspiring for a true Young fan. I agree Cortez the Killer was unreal.
Peace, and let's hope he dug what Winnipeg appreciates out of him. He definitely did at the end of the show, he was happy, and I saw the same out of him at CSNY. It's probably why he came back.

Awe inspiring for a 'true' Young fan? Looks more like a greatest hits set with the 3 new songs thrown in...

Just got in a few hours ago after my 1700 (each way) mile trip to see Neil in winnipeg.
Seeing this guy over and over for 35 years,I am still awed by his intensity. And there is simply nobody out there his age with the musical energy level that Neil has.
He shows up like he's a 21 year old kid trying to make it.It all matters,he's totaly devoted to the MUSE, and noone can ever say he just goes through the motions.
I was not too impressed with the setlist, simply because I have seen Neil so many times that I always prefer to hear seldom played tunes or tunes I havent seen him do live. Can't critisize him though , as every tour I have my ideal setlist ( as I'm sure others do too) and I can't expect Neil with 500 songs , to play MY setlist !
What would blown the roof of the MTS Centre, would have been if Neil
did Don't Be Denied.Almost obvious, and while I would have cherished that,I didnt expect it and I can understand why he might not want to blow everone away with that tune.
All in all, thanks Neil for another great show.Well worth the journey and expenses...... although I wish he'd get more reasonable with ticket prices. It has begun to bother me in principle. But if someone could place a value on this show,I can definately say I got my monies worth. And having driven around Neils old neighborhood and seen his former house and hangouts, made it all connect.
Great performance.

I agree with the person who said "Don't Be Denied" would have blown the roof off in Winnipeg. Hey Neil, why don't you play that song in Calgary (sold out by the way) or maybe save it for Toronto. It is such an inspirational song.

It would also be awsome for Neil to play Four Strong Winds in Calgary. "Think I'll go out to Alberta" ... I'm sure Ian Tyson will be in the audience.

Anyway, I can't wait for the Calgary show .. hopefully I'll finally get to hear Cortez ... I'm going to see him again in Toronto in December and when you throw in the Massey Hall show that makes 3 times in one year. It doesn't get any better.

How could he not play helpless at all these cananda shows?

Becasue Winnipeg is in Manatoba, not Ontario.

Although "Dont Be Denied" is the obvious song for Neil to play in Winnipeg and we may wonder why he wouldnt play that song in Winnipeg.
Almost seems like a no-brainer to play it. Almost seems like he should want to play it in Winnipeg.
But that would be us fans looking at it as a celebratory song- like, hey folks in winnipeg, I'm from winnipeg and made it....so kudos to winnipeg- BUT being that the songs starts off on the "dark side" - with the story of his parents splitting up- well, considering that his parents are no longer alive, he may not want to sing that song.It may have a different feeling, different view for him to sing it now. Just a guess. Otherwise , one has to ask, how could he NOT play that song in Winnipeg !!!

But "Time Fades Away" would have been nice !

I would have given this concert a 3 out of 5. The sound was crap and too loud, some bad feedback or weird distortion trouble at a couple of instances. Sounded like I was in the old Winnipeg arena.

I had hoped Neil would have done more acoustic sets to really show off some of the amazing songs he has written in the last couple of albums.

Instead this was not much more than a grunge rock show. If I want to go to an electric guitar concert, I would have best spent much less money and gone to see Joe Satriani instead, which is what I should have done.

What is with these older artists that seem to have to prove to the world they can still turn up the amps real loud and grunge out. All that was "out" was so many excellent tunes he could have played.

You sucked Neil. A great disappointment for a big home town fan. At least I can go back to some fantastic Neil Young concert DVDs to watch and truly appreciate.

he probably didn't play "don't be denied" because it is from the Time Fades Away record and he said that was a bad time for him. i was hoping he would have played a song or two from On The Beach but all in all it was still a pretty good setlist. i loved cortez the killer and cowgirl in the sand and although i am ashamed to say i never heard oh, lonesome me before i thought it was an amazing song. it was cool to see "old black" in person to.

Looking forward to the Vancouver show..I'm hoping he breaks ranks from his set list and does Sugar Mountain with a twelve string. Anyway, the setlist is a classic..with Bob Dylan playing Vancouver a couple days after here's to a special guest appearance. Go Neil GO !!
