Is the out take from JTTP where Neil claims a bootleg CD of his and walks out of the store without paying going to be on the box set? I would like to see that for a laugh. Also, I hope Look At All The Things will be on the box set. But if it isn't then I'm sure there will be enough on there that will satisfy.

MHO,

First, if someone is acting as an imposter for 'Archives Guy' that's totally uncool and I hope Thrasher throws them off the site. Its hard to be sure but the previous poster used small case letters for his signature and Archives Guy always capitalized his name. Second, he was amazingly patient even when the conspiracy 'ripoff' theorists were complaining that Neil wasn't delivering the archives in exactly the form they think they deserve. The post above doesn't sound like him.

Second, people who are unhappy should remember that it is NOT Mandatory to buy the archives. If its not in the form that you like then sit on the sidelines. The implications that Neil is doing this for the money is absurd ... when Archives Guy mentioned that they were testing 100 BD players and would list their performance on a web site it was one more affirmation that the motivation here has nothing to do with money and everything to do with Neil and his team having a whatever it takes attitude to realize HIS vision of how he wants HIS life's work laid out ... Do the math ... how much does it cost to employ a team of technologists, Joel Bernstein for 20 years, to buy 100 BD players ... work at it and re-do it 20 times in 3 updated standards ... this will go down as another example of why Neil is on different plane than his peers ... for those that are displeased that there isn't only unreleased songs, remember that fans who invest in the BD option are investing in a platform that will grow as Neil's team releases content for download ... as far as I'm concerned that could be an open door to new content for years to come. All that said, agreed that $300+ is a lot of money to spend in this economy but its a price that's more than fair for the quality of content , sound, and cost. For those who are like me, not sound junkies, its still worth noting that if Neil didn't push for the highest standards in all that he does none of us would be on this site because Neil wouldn't be the best of the best ... Finally, buying the archives does not mean you're "buying" Massey Hall again, Neil was nice enough to throw us some bones before the main course ... it doesn't warrent a complaint if the main course comes with a little side of bones ....

Something else to relax a little bit in between the discussions on the Archives. It's good news on Sugar Mountain from Allan Jones:

Thank you Thrasher for moderating and deleting the "imposter" comments.

For the record and to help manage everyone's expectations, the Q&A session ended on Tuesday. While we'll continue to monitor questions and remarks on this Post, don't expect to receive any further answers to those questions from the Archives team.

What has become clear to us is that no matter what content is released in NYA Vol1, some folks are going to be pleased and others disappointed. The same goes for choice of formats.
All that we can tell you, in all honesty, is that many years of hard work have gone into what we feel it a landmark release and that during this production the team has followed Neil's vision and direction to create what he wants...above all else.

At mentioned during the Q&A session, an updated Archives website is on it's way as well as more detailed information on the content of the set.

Once again, thanks for your input and interest...stay tuned.

For NY Archives team,
-Archives Guy

Oopps, we have to sign? Well the post above was me.

Thrasher, I still have problems with posting. (MacPro/Safari).
Can't view the code. Only a question mark appears after clicking "Post Comment". So, what I do now is: Click "Preview". Then I get a note this fails. After that I click "Post Comment" again. The verification code appears this time so I can fill it in the form.

First of all, let me remind everybody that we're discussing rock n' roll here, not matters of life and death. None of my previous comments were intended to offend anybody who supports "Archives Vol. 1" in its current state.

That said, is this "Vol. 1" really what people expected when they first heard about the Archives project? A large collection of previously released material interspersed with early studio rarities and random live cuts? To me, using the title "Archives" to describe this release is more than a little bit disingenuous.

It's possible that the record company refused to go forward with this project unless it was turned into something more like a traditional box set. It's also possible that Neil got so taken up with the recent technological advances that he lost sight of the original idea. Either way, it's disappointing to me.

I'm gonna pass on the box set on steroids.

Thank you for your time and help Archives Guy (formerly known as Test Pilot). We all learned much more about technical issues and the content of the Archives. Yeah, people get disappointed very easy. I will try to point it out one more time.

1) Money.
As far as I can understand the Archives will be a wonderful peace of art. Something like a beautiful masterpiece by Vincent van Gogh. It would be great to have one and it only would cost you 30.000 Dollars. Compared to this masterpiece the Archives vol. 1 is very very cheap for only 300 Dollars.
Besides that a 1934 Bentley will cost you 159.000 Dollars.

2) Value for money.
Can somebody explain the value of NY's lifetime work in relation to your personal life. How much did you get for your money? Isn't it priceless?

3) Content
NY has decided a long time ago to create the Archives in a way he thinks is the best for his body of creativity. NY has choosen to create the Archives himself, he did not ask a record company or whoever to make it. Imagine what would have happened if a record company suit would have made and released something like the Archives...

4) Double discs
Some people are complaining about the Massey Hall and Fillmore discs showing up in The Archives Vol. 1 again. The Archives Guy said they were a preview for the Archives. Personally I had so much pleasure since the release of both albums. Played them both a hundred times.
But for those who still feel ripped off the following question: If the Archives volume 2 will be released in January 2015 would you mind to get a preview in 2009 ? Would you? Or do you think you feel ripped again. Well, and what if the 2009 preview is the complete Homegrown album? Would you still prefer to wait until 2015?

One more question to the Archives Guy: Do you think there comes a scale model of LincVolt with the Archives vol. 6 ? And if the answer is yes what will be the scale? I prefer 1:18 but don't think that fits in the box.

...and another for AG: The answer to the question you posted a couple of weeks ago is YOU. You were talking about yourself. (The aV-109 question).

Let me be the first one to make the following complaint:

Release the Archives on VINYL!!!! Just give me the music and the book. It will sound better than the Blu-Ray.

Seriously, I dunno what I'm gonna do. I have a DVD player, and have no desire to own a Blu-Ray, except for the Archives.

At 12/04/2008 02:58:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

a question for all us neil fans not in the US,
With archives being released on dvd and blu ray, it brings up a region code question, dvd will be region 1 which is not a problem if you have a multiregion player, the problem will be on blu ray, which in the US will be code A. So far there are no multiregion blu ray players.. and us in europe will be a code B, how is this being addressed? Amazon here in the UK still doesn't have a Listing for it, any idea when its release will be? i want it ASAP and i'm happy to order from the US, but will it play on my PS3?

best wishes Rutty

The "Archives Guy" has written that the Blu-Ray will be for all regions.
There's is another post on Thrasherswheat were the Archives Guy has answered questions. He used the name "Test Pilot" over there. Lot of technical info can be found at this page.

Hey Test pilot

Thanks so much for the imput and explaining things and answering questions ! It has been very helpful !
While I admit that I have complained about ticket prices ( $ 275 in NYC for 40 rows back is nuts and I wish someone would wake Neil up on this issue of ticket prices)!), I think that paying $ 300-ish for this Archives Vol 1 on Blu-ray is totaly fine with me and my decision is made. no hesitation to fork out $ 300+ for this long awaited prize ! And even better on Blu-ray.
Question , if you;re still around TP....... Does the Archives include any recordings from the first Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour in New York ( 6 nights)in 1969 ??? This I would love to hear !
thanks

Wow. So you only listen to Neil for the music? Okay... Fine. I think that's sort of nuts since the visual component of Neil though the years has always been just as important and that his personal journey is completely relevant but to each their own... But saying that this is just an ordinary box set? Whatever. The only thing that will satisfy people is a personally led tour through Neil's archives by Neil... Times are indeed tough and this is a ton of money, but it's also shaping up to be really something in terms of depth. If you only want the music just download it. Within days of the release, google "Neil Young, archives, megaupload." Tada, everything in beautiful mp3s for free. I personally would rather have a multifaceted story of Neil.

Dear Archive Guys & Team,
Firstly thankyou for your time & patience. We are ALL passionate for Neil's music & Love the man in all his Ragged Glory.I am sure all would want the Archives project to be a roaring success. It is because we care that tempers overheat & comments appear as snarky. We are all on the same side but we are a broad Church with a wide difference of opinions.Would Neil want a bunch of yes men/women?
You cannot please all of the people all of the time, but can you guarantee that the quality and quantity quotients are in balance. If officially released studio albums are included in the Archives Volumes can you tell us they that will be complete entities as released originally with all tracks included intact?
Much Respect,
Toasty.

You are not nearly the first person to make that complaint.

"Seriously, I dunno what I'm gonna do. I have a DVD player, and have no desire to own a Blu-Ray, except for the Archives."
Um... buy it on DVD?

I think eventualy you will see it on vinyl, even if very limited. Probably about $ 500 ! I am buying the Blu-ray ,and if it ever comes out on CD, I will buy that too just for the car, camping etc.And if it comes out on vinyl,I will add that too. Probably $ 1000 all together........ but after 37 years of being a Neil fan and almost 20 years waiting for the Archive to begin, it's well worth it even if I have to make some choices and sacrafices.Once I have it, I'll have it forever.Once I have it, Neil cant take it back !
So I say buy it, enjoy it, and by the time you've played it out a few hundred times, we'll be hearing about Vol. 2 !!!

Archives guy...of the 15 unreleased/never before heard song/instrumental how many of them are instrumental...its not like 10 out of 15 is it?

I too am kinda questioning the seemingly low number of never released songs...this kinda sounds like the beatles anthology (which by the way I own all three but only listened to them once) all the songs have been released before...and the albums sound a lot better then the outtakes...hence the word 'out takes' BUT we must also consider the fact that this IS Vol.1
Maybe Neil only has 15 songs from 1963-1973 that have never been released yet...it seems to me his most prolific period came after time fades away..when he was scrapping whole albums etc...I dont know. I'm still excited and am not about to start bashing Neil...lets face it Neil was never one for looking back and now he is....and he's finally letting us look back with him. I just hope that vol. 2, (which WILL be the MOST innaresting) Vol.3, Vol.4 has more never released songs. One other thing....I for one can not afford to go out and by the archives and a blue-ray player etc. They should offer up those later download releases to those of us who buy the DVD...thats just not fair...here's and idea...set up a web site where the DVD version owners can enter the s/n or barcode# and let us download those tunes too. Its seems those of us who dont have enough cash are being punished for it! We are making the investment too! Why can we have those tunes?!

Thank you NY Archives Team, Archives Guy, Joel, Larry, Thrasher & Thrashette for this wonderful opportunity to ask all of these questions. I have been following Neil since the late 1980s (I am young, but have some gray hair and been to only 8 NY concerts). I cannot wait to check out NY's site for information next week on the Archives Vol. 1. I hope that those of us who have been waiting for the archives have been saving the pennies. Thanks!

Look, I’m as excited as the next fan about the archives vol. 1 finally coming out…and I know that no matter what I WILL be buying the thing…I just know I wont be able to deal with the thing being out there and not owning it (and I believe many, many of these other fans/complainers will do the same) but I feel this must be said; why why why are we being forced to buy the Massy Hall and Fillmore shows again? Were we not told just months ago…(when they were released) that these will NOT be part of the archives? Were we not told there would be an empty spot for them in the box? I never recall being told that these releases were “TEASERS” because they were not…which is why the Canterbury House show isn’t included! Lets be real here…those CDS read Archives PERFORMANCE SERIES…as in a separate series! Canterbury is part of the PERFORMANCE SERIES yet not in the box set…why? Toast…when that comes out is expected to part of the PERFORMACE SERIES correct? Is that a teaser for Archives Vol.4? I just don’t understand. This may come off as bitchy and all but I am thrilled about this release but come on…we were not told these were TEASERS! We were told this was part of a PERFORMACE SERIES SEPARTE from the ARCHIVES. Maybe this was an over sight or a mistake during a long rambling speech but Neil’s fans are not DUMMIES….we know if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…it’s a filled in spot in a box set that we all already own but yet we are paying $50.00 more for cause we want the other 13 unreleased songs. Its just bittersweet I guess. Sorry if I annoyed Archives dude or these other fans that will NEVER question a thing Neil does…(I usually don’t either but I had to say this) thank you

For me...this Endeavour looks every bit what Neil has strived to do and more! To the Team...Job not simply well done but above and beyond!
I am truly going to enjoy every Poke and Prod I take with my PS3.
Also for the NYA Crew, this is going to be the New Standard for what can be done...just as Neil is the "Archetype" that many Musicians strive to emulate.
I simply can't imagine being disappointed in any way considering how Neil has been apart of the Sound Track of my Life.
Thanks to Thrasher and what seems like a "Team" on his behalf...been a great ride and you kept us out of the Ditch, except when the Ditch was more interesting.

To all of you who are getting so worked up about the Archives please be patient. I feel very privileged to say I’m a Neil Young fan. The man is about to give us part of his life’swork . He like all human beings are very vulnerable especially when you lay it on the line like Neil is about to do. After reading your posts I am so disheartened by some of your extremely negative statements concerning the contents of the Archives . The Archive Guy took his/her time to answer mine and your questions about the contents/technology of the Archives and some of you went to great lengths to be critical . On the other hand a majority were very civil and totally positive. What ever way he gives us the Archives be appreciative and supportive and most of all thank your lucky stars you can afford it and it’s being made available in your lifetime.

"Innaresting way of doing things."

I've reached the point where I cringe every time I see that word. Is Neil Young the only person in North America who drops the "t" in "interesting"?

And whingers: please, give it a rest. The thing's not even released yet. If you can't afford it or you don't like the format don't buy it. Now be grown up and live with your choice.
