Archives Update from Archives Guy

The Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 Trailer by Neil Young

The following Neil Young Archives news has been moved from the Road Trip Report thread since many folks missed the comments.

Archives Guy (who now posts using an official ID - beware of imposters) reports the following:

The launching our our new Archives website has been delayed, but is looking very cool, with lots of details and information. Please stand by.

NY Archives Vo1. 1 is scheduled to be released in the following formats:
* Blu-ray, DVD, CD, Digital Download

notes-
* the CD edition does not include the Hidden Tracks that are found on the BD and DVD editions.
* the Digital Download edition's track list is the same as the CD edition.

So what are you thinking of doing when The Archives are released?

Yes, you are right. I failed to mention the ArcSoft player. Out of curiousity, what BD-Live were you downloading?

I've been playing with the Dark Knight BD disc today and found that it's BD-Live seemed very much like I was surfing the Web instead of bringing content down to me and into my player. Though I am biased, I'm liking what Shakey Pictures is doing a lot more.

1) Blu Ray Archives. All the above plus free BD-Live downloads, which I informally call "A Lifetime Admission to the Barn". And we already know Song, Video, Archival Material downloads have already been prepared.

A good summary, but with the CD edition, you don't get the book, poster or big box. There is a booklet and a smaller box with the CD edition.

The CD and Digital Download editions are for those who have cried out, "I only want the music...I don't care about film clips or pictures...just give me the music."

Thanks Archives Guy. You know LRR is going for the Blu-Ray...but I do appreciate that the voice of many fans has been heard and the CD edition is coming out. I am GLAD the CD edition is music only. Because many folks will want the CDs to supplement their Blu-Ray sets to be able to listen to this stuff on their LincVolt roadtrips without fumbling through 2 copies of the book!!!! THIS would make the Blu-Ray Archives ESSENTIAL to every fan, there would be no complaints from anyone.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider it. Otherwise I'll have to buy the CD and the BR, and that's just nonsense.

Check with Sony about this.

One thing that you need to remember is that this player is an early Profile 1.0 and is very slow. You might have already experienced long loading times and sluggish response with other titles you have. The same can be expected for the Archives set.

When you buy a DVD or BluRay in stores today, it is common for your $30 to get you not only a copy to watch in your player, but also a digital copy for watching on a portable media device. I had hoped that for the $300+ that I will spend on the "premium" edition, I would have some way to either transfer the music files from BluRay to my hard drive, or at least have it come with a digital copy for my own portable listening.

As Archives Guy has so eloquently put it, I guess I'm just not living in the real world. Just another schmuck looking for a little bonus with my $300 purchase. I am irate that I will not get a digital copy with my BluRay edition, and I am downright fuming that I will not be getting a lifetime subscription to Rolling Stone, or a free iPod with my purchase. Way to burst my bubble, Archives Guy.

I'm not here to whine or bust Archives Guy's chops, but the request (or as Archives guy misstated "demand") is totally within the realm of reality and isn't limited to fanatics and jerks who take a mile when you give em an inch. No one was asking for the world. Its actually a reasonable request.

What's the catch? There's always a catch.

Well there are two. Actually three.

1. If you don't have the appropriate equipment, you'll either have to buy it, or carry on grumbling.

2. It requires some time and effort on your part, instead of hassling someone else to do it on your behalf. But hey, you want the MP3s.

3. If you don't know what the analog hole is, you'll have to resort to a research engine.

Anyone with the BluRay set is capable of making their own MP3s. If they won't do it, or take the trouble to find out how to, I've little sympathy with them.

The fact remains that it is impossible to keep the audio locked onto a BluRay disc. So to anyone who thinks they ought to have access to a free MP3 version, it looks as if you're not going to be given that. But you can do it yourself. Hell, I even provided the search term.

The set is coming out in BluRay, DVD, CD and digital download. That's four formats, and LP is being considered, which would bring it to five. Surely it's enough to be going on with?

Anything I've seen mentioned as omitted like Highschool Graduation, or white flower there is no concrete info on and probably never made it to tape.

Also if you add up archives guys tracks breakdown, the hidden tracks are not included in the total of 128. So you can add 12 hidden songs to make it 140.
Plus I think we only have 116 tracks or so figured out.

Off our tracklist I count:
15 unreleased songs
24 unreleased versions(alot of this is riverboat stuff)

And, here I am 99% certain: The 115 track tracklisting I have cobbled together are the non-hidden songs. The "scroll" represents the CD tracklisting. The "file folders" represent the non-hidden songs on the DVD and CD and will auto play. There is one non-hidden track I have not been able to figure out (for a total of 116) as I don't see it on the scroll nor as a folder file. To access the "hidden tracks" you need to dive into the folders or elsewhere. The "BD-Live downloads" are accessible from the interactive timeline.

Just a note on the vinyl version (under consideration at this time) of the Archives. I have the feeling some NY fanatics would love to see the vinyl version. Since they are fanatics they also will buy the DVD or Blu-Ray version. Just because it has all the interesting extra stuff. I think it's good for the fanatics to keep it simple with maximum pleasure to avoid discussions about triple investments in NY's archives.

It's a great thing that's part of the game but sometimes comes with emotion or not so polite comments. I don't like this at all but I do understand we are all different people. And these things do happen in the real world. I have bought Radiohead, David Gilmour and other albums recently that have all included a download pass.

I don't think I would mind as much if it was a BR/DVD ONLY release, but now we are being told that the mp3 purchase WILL be possible. All we are saying is that why not give us the opportunity to obtain both? Maybe for a little extra cost, if it's about the money, I really couldn't give a damn anymore.

Sorry if I seem rude, I'm just peeved that we're now apparently "demanding" things from Neil. He owes us nothing, we're just saying "Hey, wouldn't it be cool IF..."

The information out on the web is very difficult to navigate for
several reasons. Firstly, where info is available, it is often too
technical for even intermediate techies to digest. Secondly, BD-Live is such a new technology that there is very little out there about it at all. Thirdly, because with a PC the hardware AND the software that are at issue, there are compatibility questions involved, and very few answers to the specific questions that I seem to have.

Gotta love Neil on the cutting edge of technology, but it doesn't make
life very easy for his fans. I'm only 35, and I'm pretty technically
savvy. I can only imagine what this is like for a crunchy 60 year-old
nature child Neil fan.

Looking at archives guys track breakdown. When I count songs I know to exist in the categories Unreleased Song(15) and Unreleased Version(24), I get the same numbers he gives, leaving less interesting hidden tracks. Maybe you can verify.

I'm 99% sure that drives themselves aren't the problem. When you get right down to it, the drives are relatively "dumb," at least when it comes to actual disc contents. In virtually all cases, all optical drives - Blu-Ray, DVD, CD, Laserdisc, etc. - merely pass the data on the discs along to something else in the chain. You won't be able to burn discs but reading them won't be an issue.)

...software! As of right now, I believe there are only two pieces of software that can officially play BDs on PCs, both of which cost $75-80. They are:

-Cyberlink's PowerDVD ("Ultra" Edition).
-Arcsoft's TotalMedia Theatre.

(If you have a Mac or run Linux, you'll have to pursue some very rough, very "gray" areas in order to play BDs. Even then, BD-Live probably won't be supported. Sorry.)

I purchased TMT a few days ago and can confirm that it handles both BD-Live and DTS-MA HD without any hitches. I'm told Version 8 of PowerDVD Ultra supports BD-Live and DTS-HD MA too. I haven't purchased the program but have seen reports from people who have and are happy with it.

If anybody does take the PC route, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to keep the software up to date.

-First, check with your drive vendor and see if there are any firmware updates. Yes, the drives are relatively "dumb" but firmware's still important. In the case of my LG, I downloaded a program from LG, ran it and then rebooted my computer. Bam. My drive was fully up to date.
-Second, make sure you have the latest version of your BD player. I think PowerDVD has an auto-update feature but I'm not sure. (Caveat: make sure you have PowerDVD 8 Ultra! PowerDVD 7.3 and earlier will play some BDs but, AFAIK, won't play BD-Live material and won't fully decode DTS-MA HD audio, which is what will be used for the BR version.) Unfortunately, TMT's not always as clean. Last I checked, you had to log on to Arcsoft's forum to get the latest patch (2.1.6.128). That said, once I patched TMT, it ran beautifully on the 64-bit version of Vista. It should be just fine on the 32-bit version too.

The second step in particular is extremely important. There are newer discs that won't run on, say, version 8.0.1 of a program but will run on 8.0.2. That's just the nature of the beast. Hopefully, when Archives Guy reports back with tests, he'll be able to report on the latest versions of PowerDVD and TMT. To do otherwise could unintentionally lead to bad info spreading.

TMT: awesome! That's great news. I'll post over there and let people know, especially since PowerDVD and WinDVD might be problematic when released. (I know you said Corel and Cyberlink are working on it but, as they euphemize, poo happens.)

PCs: yeah, I agree that standalone players are a better bet for a great majority of people. Setting up a PC that will deliver the full A/V experience is a challenge but I'm up for it. That and I'm an early adopter who loves to tinker with things. I remember paying...$250, I think?...for a DVD-ROM drive and decoder card about a year after DVDs first came out. (Back then, PCs were so underpowered that the card was necessary!) Now that was fun!

Oh yeah, I forgot about virtualization and dual booting. The answer's going to be nuanced, especially because I don't own a Mac and haven't poked around looking for answers.

Boot Camp / Other dual-boot solutions: this should be relatively fool-proof. The only caveat is that the video might be crippled. I don't know offhand if Macs somehow cause the HDCP copy protection to go haywire. I'd imagine not as long as the video card supports HDCP but I just can't guarantee anything. (Of course, there are ways to defeat HDCP but I'll let you all figure it out.)

Virtualization: same deal as above, but a much better chance of HDCP going haywire. Beyond that, due to the way virtualization works, it's possible that you'll have problems with other things, like hardware acceleration. (HA = making the video card decode the video instead of the CPU. Trust me, it's a lifesaver, even if you have a top-of-the-line, hand-built beast.) I mean, in theory, it shouldn't be a problem, but we all know how theory and computers mix.

If you want to track down a more firm answer, you might want to swing by avsforum.com and see what they say. Lots of people over there have all kinds of crazy rigs and can give you so much info that it'll make your head spin.

I bought a Sony BD drive, and I haven't opened the box yet, but I believe it came packaged with Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra. I expect that updates will fix any problems in due time. Archives Guy(s), make sure you're reporting all your issues with software directly to the software publishers, because it will get your problems fixed much faster.

BTW, what are the types of issues you're having with PowerDVD? Are they BD-Live related only, or are they normal playback issues?

Between the two discs, there are 23 tracks on Massey and Fillmore.

Now, from what we've been led to believe, the Archives Vol 1 will be comprised of 128 tracks total. So, after some quick math, 18% of the archives will be made up of songs we've already purchased on Massey Hall and Fillmore.

My friend, that aint a small part of the archives, in fact, it's a helluva large chunk!
