Neil Young's "Twisted Road" Tour is Coming!!!

UPDATES: Neil Young's "Twisted Road" Concert Tour Dates Schedule Spring 2010

According to Louisville (Kentucky) Courier-Journal by Jeffrey Lee Pucket:
Neil Young's "Twisted Road" tour is coming to the Louisville Palace May 26 and tickets go on sale March 27 at 10 a.m. for $245, $125 and $85.

There is no word on what band this will be or whether this will be a solo tour only.

Judging by the seating capacity of Louisville Palace of 2,600, this tour may be similar to the Chrome Dreams/Trunk Show 2007 small theater tour.

Thanks Sean!

More details as they become available.

UPDATE:

Opening act: Bert Jansch

- May 26 - Louisville Palace Theatre, Louisville, KY (2,600 seats)

So, it does look like a southern man does need Neil Young around any how now doesn't it?

Don't be denied.

Here's some more on tour opener the legendary Bert Jansch. Many folks are unfamiliar with Jansch.

Here's what Neil Young said about Jansch in an interview Guitare & Claviers Magazine (French guitar magazine) in April 1992:
Q : Of all the guitarists you know, who has made the biggest impression on you?

NEIL: Bert Jansch (Pentangle guitarist) is the best acoustic guitarist ; he's my favourite anyway. For electric guitar, I'd say Jimi Hendrix.

But as for acoustic guitar, Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi. That first record of his is epic. It came from England, and I was especially taken by The Needle of Death, such a beautiful and angry song. That guy was so good... And years later, on On the Beach, I wrote the melody of Ambulance Blues by styling the guitar part completely on Needle of Death. I wasn't even aware of it, and someone else drew my attention to it. I'd met him in England in the early 70s, with Pentangle, but I this huge limousine and all that shit and they had a strange attitude with me, considering me as one of those bonehead superstars.

An excellent overview on Bert Jansch on YouTube:

The first part of Acoustic Routes, the Bert Jansch documentary from 1992. Sorry about the poor video quality: the video has been ripped straight from VHS.

The first part features Billy Connolly, Hamish Imlach, Archie Fisher and Anne Briggs. Bert talks about his first album, his early influences, Anne Briggs, Jimmy Page et cetera.

Songs:

Bert Jansch - Strolling Down the Highway
Anne Briggs - Go Your Way
Anne Briggs - Blackwater Side
Hamish Imlach & Archie Fisher - Solid Gone

"Ambulance Blues" - Folk legend Bert Jansch and Neil Young. Live at Bridge School Benefit 2006

According to concertwire [0], it's Bert Jansch. According to Neil, "As much of a great guitar player as Jimi was, Bert Jansch is the same thing for acoustic guitar…and my favourite". [1]

It will be hard to top the experiance I had in The parking lot of the Holiday Inn in Kingston On. on 4/13/09. As far as ticket prices, I gave a scalper 900.00 for 2 2nd row Toronto massey hall seats and 1000.00 for 2 Buffalo Shea Theatre front row seats. I am hoping Neil will work His way North on this tour. If not I will go as far as I have to to see him again. 32 times and counting. Tuned4life

As another side note I've just completed my Neil Young Vinyl collection; I now own every single Neil, Buffalo Springfield and CSNY album on vinyl- if it was released on vinyl I got it (besides War Song no 45s) It's taken awhile (I started about 6 years ago) and a pretty penny but NOTHING sounds better! Harvest Moon, Broken Arrow, Weld, Dead Man, Y.O.T.H. and Eldorado were the hardest (and most expensive) to get, but well worth it!

Here we go with the Neil Young tickets are so expensive thing again! Is there really nothing else you can say? I can't afford a Ferrari either, but you don't hear me complaining about it! The next most expensive tickets are half the $245 price tag, which is about as expensive as the last tour. I said it before and will say it again, if you can afford it but think it's 'too expensive' than you don't really wanna go, do ya? Not being able to afford it is a different thing, but telling Neil to make his tickets cheaper? He chooses to keep his artistic integrity by not endorsing any products and if that comes at the price of more expensive tickets then I don't mind.

Hope he visits Europe too! Better still, that he and Jansch record an album (live or studio, I don't mind).

For ticket price whiners - not all seats are 245. I paid 70 for the "worst" seats at the Tower theater in Philly in 2007 and it was AWESOME. If you don't think 70 bucks to see Neil in a small theater is good value, you are clueless! go back to stealing music off the internet you cheapskates!

At 3/24/2010 03:27:00 PM, Blogger Harm said...

Maybe so... but the price gap is so big, that there's no telling what those 245 seats have to offer extra. Could be a type-o and it was supposed to say $145. Still expensive, but hey that's what un-endorsed intimate concerts cost. The stadium tour was only half as expensive and t.b.h. not as good as the 2007-08 fall/winter tour.

I do find it odd though that it is the prices that some people immediately start talking about. And charging people a lot for art shows more integrity than using you fame to sell stuff for money, no artistic merit in that, but plain greed.

In Paris (Olympia), cheapest seats for CSN were like 55 euros. In Belgium, the state next door, most expensive seats for CSN were 60 euros.
Do you think the artist personnally knows and controls everything? I bet they guess the same money in Paris and Brussels, so why such a difference?

Frankly I don't like the language of the anonymous (quite trolling ) Anyway for the Ryman standards, the top seat prices are from 2 to 5 times higher than acts as Aretha Franklin, John Prine, Levon Helm, David Gray and Norah Jones, just for citing someone.A little exaggerated, though in abstract affordable by not fews of us, me included...We can't blame the venues owners anyway.

A couple of things.

1st, did you read the open letter linked above? If you did, you'd realize that all of your logic is flawed.

This is exactly hwat happened last time tix went onsale but by end of tour either folks were saying they were worth it or kicking themselves for missing it. Which group are you in?

2nd, who are all of your Neil friends that are also disenchanted? Because all of my Neil friends are quite excited.

3rd, I'm highly offended by your cult insinuations. In over 15 years on Rust and 30+ years as a Neil fan, I've never heard anything like this in the slightests.

Me thinks you're just a troll to cause trouble. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and be glad to respond in detail.

But I'm not because you're probably just a hit & run type.

Come back, register a handle and we can chat.

If you're a rustie, there's no reason for you to hide. Do I know you personally?? I get the impression we know each other?

Why the hate & anger?

Let's go to the show and have a beer.

Thrasher & all the rest..

I am reading a lot here and there is two thoughts about TW:
1. I really appreciate it for all the up-to-date information of Neil-Content.
2. I regularly tend to think I should stop reading here, when I see how critizising comments are being deleted or put down.

Charging 245$ for a seat is being out of touch with reality. I am not talking about measuring the quality of Neils music in money.
I am a huge fan of his music and its an important part of me and my life.
But.
Dont bash me for this, but Neil is no top level music act anymore. He is not Robbie Williams, Lada Gaga, Metallica or the Stones.
He is a Legend, of course, but 245 is just out of touch. And even for those acts, 245 is a monstrous price tag.
I payed 50€ for Metallica a few years ago. I pay 70€ to see Mark Knopfler this year. Very good seats, and still far away from 245.

What I want to say. The price bitching is not about measuring his music up in money. Its about plain and simple common sense.
And I think its pretty sad, if its not okay to discuss such matters here without being put in a dirty and wrong corner, when opting for the "wrong side"..

Sorry i have to laugh, but did you really compare Neil Young to "Robbie Williams, Lady Gaga, Metallica or the Stones"? I've seen Neil 4 times in the last two years and yes, he grows older. But he doesn't loose anything of his greatness i think.

But guys, it can't be, that here on TW there's more criticism about the prices than happyness about the upcoming tour. Hey, it's like christmas and birthday together when a new tour is announced.

Well I really hope Neil will also come to Europe!
2008: 2 times

Robin, Neil has almost never been a top level music act except for the period in CSNY and when Harvest was released if you consider "top level" related to sales. If you instead consider the musical quality I still regard Neil as a top level music act and I will gladly pay $200 to see him play solo in a small relatively intimate venue. I've done so two times before when he played Falconersalen in Copenhagen and hesitated at first due to the prize but didn't regret it for a second. Neil is to me a much greater entertainer than Lady Gaga and Robbie Williams will ever be!

I sure hope Neil will take the tour to Europe where he will play in sold out venues disregarding the ticket prizes. As Neil confronted a heckler during one of the shows in Falconersalen that complained about the steeo ticket prizes during the show: "If you don't shut up I'll pay you twice of what you payed so you can the hell out of here!" (no exact quote)

My two cents...

Stones are a bad example - their top ticket last time through the New York area was $450. And that was three or four years ago.

The tickets are overpriced when they don't sell. These, sadly, will sell.

Robin,

Apologies for any offense. Look, put your self in my position on this in terms of being super-pscyhed to see Neil and then being brought down by mellow harshers.

Thus far, no negative comments in this thread have been deleted.

I do completely understand that folks are not happy.

But please.

Seriously. I beg you. Did you read everything in the open letter?

If so, what is different this time?

Every conceivable aspect of this subject has been exhausted. It makes no sense.

Again, what we see are false equivalencies. You may think Lady Gaga is worth it. But it doesn't fly here and never will. Sorry.

Again, no serious Neil fan could ever make such a statement.

I'm trying very hard here to be patient. I have better things to do like make travel arrangments.

Here's one last suggestion.

Say your favorite football team is in the Super Bowl. You're a Raiders fan or something. Do you know what the top tickets for the Super Bowl are? I have no idea but it's like thousands of $'s.

Do I think it's worth it or a ripoff? The point is, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I could complain. I could say the NFL are capitalist pigs. Obviously its worth it to somebody.

Again go back and read the Open Letter and comments.

After the tour no one asked for a refund.

The top $ ticket is NOT the price of the concert. Get real. For all we know, it's for the first 6 rows. Who knows.

Listen, I'm not trying to be a jerk. I respect your opinion and ask you to respect mine.

1) The ticket prices went up when everybody got the idea that music should be free and quit buying records. Money used to be in records, now it is in touring.
2) Neil's main audience can probably afford to pay as the majority are men in their 50's - old hippies who are now stockbrokers or IBM executives.

More new albums news...
First single will be Don't Change No Gears. Second will be Running Dry (Requiem for an empty tank).

This is the price of tickets these days- take it or leave it. As we've learned from the past few tours, all this bitching does NOOOOTTTTHHHHIIIINNNGGGG to change the prices and as I recall EVERYONE LOVED the shows last tour. I paid $75. and saw Neil front row at MSG- and those were the cheap tickets. Not too bad.
If your gonna spend the money for a fantastic show good for you and enjoy- because, no doubt, you will. If you're not going to spend the cash out of principle or you can't afford- fine but don't come on here to try bringing us down- really! You can stay home that night with your Principles.
If times are tough please, be wise, and don't spend the cash on tickets- feed your kids.

By the way- how about some discussion on what this tour is...Twisted Road? New Album or maybe Neil will be playing tunes from throughout his career...like how he was playing those TTN tunes last year?
I wonder....

"I wont retire but I might re-tread!"

Neil Young, as always, is worth every penny.

ROCK ON NEIL!

@Robin:

Let's talk about "being out of touch with reality", shall we?

Let's say that the top tickets were sold for $100. Since nobody has yet figured out a way to stop scalpers and other legal "ticket brokers" from getting tickets en masse (and they seem to be particularly adept at getting large numbers of the best seats, through whatever channels they use), a great many of those tickets will end up for resale prior to the show.

Will those nice ticket brokers sell them for $100? $120 maybe? No, they'll sell them for MARKET VALUE, which is basically whatever some rich shmuck will pay when he realizes he NEEDS to see Neil play from the front row a few days before the show.

So, WHO SEES THE MONEY FROM THOSE TICKETS? Neil? No. Some asshole ticket broker/scalper, who has done nothing to earn that money except be first in line when they went on sale.

By charging higher prices, THE ARTIST gets a much higher percentage of the money generated by ticket sales, and the scalpers make less because the market will not support $500 ticket sales (or not many of them anyway).

This is basic economics, folks. Neil is just getting what's his, and not letting crooks get it.

and its not like neil is playing in a superdome or something, he plays in venues that were created for music, not an echoey hockey arena. ITS WORTH IT!

I am so delighted Neil is going on tour again, hopefully Ireland will be on the list when he announced European dates. Vicar street might be an option and he played there solo in 2003 for the Greendale gigs.

After seeing him do the electric thing twice in the last 2 years or so, it will be great to see the solo accoustic thing again.

As for ticket prices, it amazes me how people go on about this. Not that 245 is cheap, but there is a small percentage of these expensive seats, the average price is probably around 140 mark which for a solo accoustic gig with Neil is well worth the price.

If someone has the information on the AVERAGE ticket price is, post it here, as we should be talking about Neil and the music here and not ticket price economics.

In my opinion, Neil has been slipping in recent years. Maybe being alone onstage will make him up his game. One giveaway to how much he's bringing will be whether or not he can sing the majority of songs without looking at the floor much (reading lyrics). I know he's getting old, but his lyric reading is out of hand. Last couple of tours he's been lookin at the floor a whole lot. Very much of that really blows the spell for me. Hard to believe he's being sincere and fully present.
Solo acoustic will demand much more of him than his tours of late. I hope he's up to it. My absolute favorite tour was the 99 solo tour. A man completely at the top of his game. I don't expect this will equal it, but it could come a decent second. Here's hoping. Best of luck, Neil.

Dear friends, trolls, and everyone in between,
Let's review the math together:

If we assume the RYMAN holds 2,361 people and that ticket prices are $245/125/85 and seats are split 1/3 for each price then:

= 787 seats @ 245 = $193,000
= 787 seats @ 125 = $98,000
= 787 seats @ 85 = $67,000
= 2361 seats total = $358,000 revenue

Then, assume 50% (at least goes to the promoter, marketing, ticketmaster, ect...)

= $179,000

Then assume costs of the band, roadies, equiptment being set up, transportation, hotel, meals = $35,000 (just a guess and probably too low)

= $144,000

Then he has to pay Bert = $40,000

= $104,000

Then pay Obama, Pelosi, Reid taxes (@54% marginal tax rate post the health care scam

= 48,000 left for Neil

* 20 shows = $960,000 for the whole tour

Now remember the guy's like 65, he's been touring for 40+ years, he could play stadiums and make more than $1mm in ONE SHOW and save himself the aggrevation of waking up in a different city evey other day, travelling, being on the road, ect...

How many of the complainer here would go to their boss at the end of the year and say, "I'd don't want a raise, actually I'll take a pay cut so I'm not GREEDY?" .... how many musical artists have the integrity to play SMALL venues at the expense of their wallets? How many complainers in Neil's shoes would do a stadium tour to maximize revenues at the expense of art? I say 100% ... its the people who are grateful that would do what Neil does which is do the right thing which is play small venues and screw making huge money ... looks its all relative but for Neil at this stage of his career its probably really tough to keep hitting the road and on a relative basis he's leaving HUGE money on the table ....

Now, for those who bitch about a $245 ticket as if the tax man came and took the money out of your pocket, (Like Obama, Pelosi, Reid picked mine with these new tax increases against the will of the majority of our citizens) YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO, Neil said as such in 2007 in an interview, its NOT MANDATORY, and for those who feel they have to go but are too CHEAP, remember they're selling $85 tickets. Plus, how many of the complainers have a $75 per month cable bill? Guess what, I don't have a cable bill and I'm gonna use the savings to pay $500/ticket if I have to ... how many of you have a $100 cell phone bill, or a $10/day smoking addiction, ect.... look, you can shovel snow during the winter and make $245 working over a couple days if you're industrious ... the bitchin and moaning is getting really old and its illogical ... finally, Robyn, I respectfully disagree with your assessment that Neil is "past his prime" or not as good as other acts ... I would argue that he's on top of his game and in his own league far above them all and especially with respect to longevity and still being as relevant as ever ... if you can't see this tour as a blessing, call up some Leonard Skynard fans and ask them what they'd pay to see Ronnie and co.. at the RYMAN

Respectfully,
Dan

Dan said: "the bitching and moaning is getting old, and really illogical"

And all that after that really unique, insightful rant about the President. That truly never gets old does it?

In truth, its really not hard to make more money than the government can steal, so why not do it, instead of bitching about it?

And as far as Neil goes, I don't like the ticket prices anymore than anyone else, but bottomline is, I can always make more money, how many more opportunities am I going to have to see Neil?

Okay, you got me wrong. When naming acts like Robbie Williams or Lady Gaga (or Madonna, or the Stones, or ACDC, or..) as top level acts, I wasnt saying, that they have the better music.
I wouldn't know TW, if it were like that. I am just talking about market value. Mainstream music that is being played on the radio, and thats where Neil just not is, sad as it is.
We are not living in a world, where Music Arcade is a well known evergreen, as much as it should be.

Anyway, everyones got their own opinion, I just think, that 245 is too. much.
I can afford it, three times if wanted to. Thats not the point. The point is being reasonable.
Comparable acts to Neil are David Gilmour, Dylan adn their likes. They dont charge 245. They dont have to, Neil does not have to. They all have earned their share of money and there is no need to charge that much from their fans. It would jus tmake a much better impression of Neil, if ticket prices were on a bit more mellow level.

Well... 'the Boss' has been needing a Teleprompter for his lyrics since the early nineties and that included songs that he's been singing all his carreer. Personally, I can forgive Neil for having a peek at the lyrics to say Sad Movies, Kansas, No One Seems To Know or Stringman.

Part 1....

Thrasher
My logic is far from flawed.I see about 8-10 different artists a year in concert, though Neil has always been my favorate, and none of them charge anywhere near $ 245, $ 150, $ 125.... except Neil Young.Nor have I seen some of the other artists I like selling hats with their name on it for $ 30.I can easily afford 2 tickets and 2 hats, but thats not the point. What Neil is charging is outragous, disgusting, pathetic greed, period.Like Robin said, it looks bad..becasue it is bad ! It's pathetic that he feels he has to charge that kind of $.I read one comment about how all his older fans are bankers or wall street types and can afford it.... again, another stupid statement excusing the ticket prices. There's alot of older people NOT making alot of $ or out of work.
I have been a Neil fan for 40 years and have seen and heard everything he's done.I love his music, both acoustic and electric.Love his songs, his voice, his guitar work and for many many years very much appreciated his attitude and who he was as a person,,,, as an artist. But Neil has changed ALOT as a person. We all love it when Neil didnt give a shit if a record sold or not- the true artist.... never sold out.... not in it for the $$$.BUT that has all changed.Right now,as the past few tours, when he tours he is in it for the $$$ 110 % ! Who's kidding who here ??? Look at the other artists who charge $ 100 plus for tickets and most Neil fans laugh at those artists who are fakes and images and complete sell outs only in it for the $$$.Well guess what folks,Neil ain't much better. Most of the artists charging over $ 100 are total A-holes driven by the disire to make alot of $$$.Neil now looks and acts the same way.Stephen Stills charging $ 29, Neil charging $ 245 ! I'm not comparing them musicaly, but it says something.I had first row for Lucinda Williams and it cost me $ 50 ! Dylan, $ 70, Jackson Brown I got great seats for $ 60.that's my point.I'm not saying anyone is better than Neil, but the only folks charging what Neil charges are the "popular" and "hot" artists who come on to the scene seeking wealth and fame. What Neil is doing is a disgrace. But he knows he has a cult-like following , so it's a "screw them" take advantage mentality.
YES Thrashers, the reactions are sometimes cult-like.So many people get soooo angry at anything said against Neils ticket prices and then I read post after post of excuses, justifications and even someone doing all kinds of math to try and prove Neil isnt greedy. What kind of person makes that effort to prove ticket prices are reasonable when other artists charge $ 30-70 and do well ??? A cultist !
Have you ever spoken to a violent minded revolutionary ? Have you ever spoke to someone in a cult ? An extreme religion ? they all do the same.Criticize anything and they come unglued trying to excuse and justify their leaders behaviour.Same stuff happens here. It's actualy quite shocking.
I had the pleasure of meeting Neil several times in the 70's through a friends work and even had the fun of smoking a joint with him and laughing and chatting. He was a great guy, true to his art form and far from being a sell out.But I'm sorry to say, now he wants you to pay $ 250 for tickets and $ 30 for his hat and he doesnt give a fuck what you think. He's gonna take as much $ as he can and that IS his attitude in 2010 ! He doesnt need the $ as he will make more in 2010 from other $ comming in and investment dividends, but still he wants to suck it all in.It's realy an embarassment. He is NOT the same person he was. This is not about paying hotel rooms for the staff or even the Bridge school. He has become a greedy bastard who knows he has a fan base of cult-like people who will justify and pay $ 1000 a ticket when the time comes...and it's comming !

At 3/25/2010 07:40:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

part 2

As for my friends outside of TW, I called 4 of them and mentioned Neil is touring. All 4 immediately made reference to his prices, 2 of them basicaly asking me " so how much is the greedy bastard charging this time ? ".
That is the real world.Too bad Neil doesnt give a shit.I still love his music, love his guitar work, love his songs.....but I dont like the guy himself any more.He has changed 180 degrees , and so has my attitude.
I'm sure I will read 20 more comments justifying his concert ticket prices, all laced with anger, and that will prove the cultist mentality that some of his fans have.Whatever Neil says or does is Gold.Neil could fart thru the harp and people here would say how great it was.I have seen well over 100 shows, some good, some bad, some great and some terrible.....but to those cultist-like fans, every show he ever did was the greatest thing they ever saw and that's not real.
I do enjoy your forum here Thrasher, but I dont like the reactions to those who have something negative to say about Neil. It's not a healthy or real environment. So go buy a $ 30 Neil had and pull it over your eyes and pretend Neil is cool charging $ 245 for any seat.I feel anything over $ 100 is unacceptable simply becasue he doesnt have to charge that to do well and make it worth his effort..... and he certainly doesnt need the $.So folks, keep it up, do the math, justify and excuse it like a follower of a cult hero.It get funny sometimes.

I agree with Anonymous.
I'm 20 years old, a student and have gone to alot of gigs in my pretty short life. I love both current day music (there's a lot of interesting stuff in the indie community) and music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.
I became a major Neil Young fan in 2008, just after missing the Chrome Dreams tour (and I'm still kicking myself for this up til today, wish I'd gotten into him a bit earlier). He's one of my favorite artists and I love his music.
I've seen him twice since: on the Rock Werchter festival (where the organisators said he was very expensive), so the price was the regular price for festival tickets, about 70 euros for a day I guess.
Saw him last year in a big arena too, the Sportpaleis. Standing tickets were about 60 Euros, it ain't cheap, but it was worth it. A decent price he can ask IMO. I've seen other big classics like Roger Waters and Bob Dylan in big venues for about the same price.

When an artist is playing smaller, more intimate venues, his ticket prices will go up. I don't even have a problem with that. But the prices he's asking here, 80$-245$ aren't classy IMO. If you end up getting the 80$ tickets you're almost sure you're getting a crappy seat in the back. It's not because Neil CAN ask these prices, as people will obviously pay, that he SHOULD do this. If he comes to Europe on this tour I'm definatly gonna try and get decent tickets. I have some money saved for things like this, music is and remains my biggest passion. So I'm ready to pay loads and it'll probably even "be worth" it too, as I can imagine seeing a Neil solo set must be awesome.

It would be a lot cooler on Neil's part if prices were something like 40$ - 80$ - 120$ - 150$
245$ sounds insane, why can only the elite get a chance to see him up close :(? He has definatly changes, and while I believe he still enjoys playing (I can see the passion), money's probably a big factor for him doing these tours too. I'm sure he already has alot and earns more than enough every year. His new albums probably don't sell much but he must be getting fortunes from royalties alone...

And I also am somewhat annoyed at the "blind praise, cult like following" of Neil Young on this site. I love music, and not just Neil Young's music. I've heard and seen alot of artists do incredible things. Neil is great, but are you really not disappointed at these prices? Wouldn't it be alot cooler if they were lower and you'd hear Neil saying in interviews "Yeah, I could charge higher prices. But I'm not doing that to the fans. That's not what it's about. It's not only the wealthy that should get a chance to see me play."

This is not only true for Neil Young of course, there are lots of artits doing this. And in my opinion, it's indefendable.

here's my take...i can certainly afford these tickets prices. i'm a thirty something yuppie dude with a good income. however, 10 years ago when i was a semi-broke college student it would have been a different matter. now, i'd argue that i was a cooler guy back then than i am now. but that guy could not have afforded to go see neil young. i think there are a lot of folks like that out there. they love neil but simply can't afford even the "cheap" seats. so they'll never get to experience the magic of a neil young show. and i think that's pretty sad.

as someone else said, only the rich and elite get to be up close to see neil young on this tour. at least the last tour had ga seats on the floor...yeah, they were 85 bucks a pop, but these days that will get you a seat at the back of the theater.

neil IS a greedy old bastard. don't try to sugar coat it folks. i'll be there, padding his bankroll, financing his little car project, just like most of you will.

but i'll be in the "cheap" seats.

Daniel,
the thing is: I do enjoy talking about Neils music and live performances, and discussing those matters. That's the reason I come here. What I don't like is blind idolation. Neil is my musical hero, and while I don't enjoy most of his newer stuff as much as the old classics, that's all just a matter of opinion and musically he can do whatever he wants. I'll listen, I might not like it, but I won't think less of him, it's his music.

Asking this much for a ticket however doesn't have much to do with love of music, more with love of money. Obviously it's not the same Neil as the hippie from the 60s, people change. But I'm just disappointed he's charging so much. Again, I'll go see him if he comes here, I'm a student without an income but I have saved for stuff like this. I just feel sad for anybody who won't be able to go just because they can't afford it.

These are things I feel should be able to be discussed on a Neil Young website without being told "if you don't like it here, go away!". This is the biggest Neil Young website and certainly the best place to go to if I want to keep up to date. Only thing I'd like is for the news reports to be a bit more objective, not constant praise. When he presents a new album and it gets negative reviews it'll always be defended. I kinda liked FITR myself, definatly not great but I enjoyed some of the songs. I think he still does amazing live shows but he's probably past his peak when it comes to making new music.

I'm not trying to criticize you at all. I just feel like adressing these issues, because they make this place seem out of touch IMO. I see this on other fansites for old classics as well: e.g. A Fleeting Glimpse, the Pink Floyd fansite. Funnily enough not on theneverendingpool, a site following Bob Dylan. Enough healthy criticism without being told to go away over there, but then again Bobby has probably surprised his fans a bit too much ;)

There is at least one ticket agency (scalpers) already offering Neil Young tickets for sale.........LOL,maybe Neil sold them a few of those good seats for a little extra !

Also, tickets for the Ryman are supposed to be on sale this Saturday, yet there is no listing on ticketmaster yet.... less than 2days before they are supposed to go on sale.

something seems wrong on both fronts......

Thrasher:

Some of the previous entries on this thread I just couldn't bear to read. How can people be so unkind?

I can't think of anything better to spend my money on than being able to breathe the same air as Neil and get to see and hear him do whatever it is he wants to do...to be right there with him!

In December '08 I paid $245.00 to see Neil for the December 15 show at MSG, and I also paid $49.00 for the December 16 show. The music was just as terrific the second night as the first!

I don't know why people are obsessed with the prices. Save your pennies like I do, and then you'll have whatever you need to enjoy the best music there is. No one is forcing anyone to go to a show.

I say, go see Neil Young Trunk Show and then decide if the prices are worth it to see him LIVE!

I went and saw NYTS three more times last Saturday, and can't hardly wait to go see it again!

This film is a Masterpiece, and yet, it isn't live music. It's the closest thing to it that I've ever experienced, but it's still not live. I was there in December '07 for one of the NYC shows, and have never experienced, before or since, the POWER of live music like that!!!

I can't wait to hear about when Neill will be in NYC again!

I'm also hoping Pegi will visit again soon! Can't wait to hear her new album! I think she's wonderful, too!

Please come soon!!!!!

I just don't want to miss a thing!

Thanks, Thrasher, for everything you do. Sometimes I think we just don't realize what a labor of love all this is for you.

This is my home away from home!

I sure love Neil and Pegi, and you, too, Thrasher!

Marian M.

PS. I know I need to send you some $$$ to support TW and put my money where my mouth is.

Harm, If you think Neil's just been taking the occasional peak at the lyrics for the rarities, you haven't been paying attention.
Marian, some of us are thrilled to be finally getting a dose of Neil without Pegi, after a Pegi-muddied decade. Let us enjoy it awhile without raising that spectre.

At 3/25/2010 01:05:00 AM,
My bad and my apologies for bringing politics into this tired, ever recycled argument about ticket prices ...

I played hooky today for about an hour a half and went to see the Truck Show at the Sunshine Theatre in Manhattan ... the price was like $10-12 ... the movie is epic ... other than me there were 3 other people in the theatre ... I sat in the middle but the front row was there for the taking all for about $10 ... my advice if you don't like the prices is splurge for a Trunk Show front row seat and skip the twisted road tour ... True there's nothing like the live show but the Trunk Show in a theatre is pretty cool and is a way to deal with the fact you don't think Neil is worth $85 ... and I don't see Dylan, Sprinstein, Gaga, whomever putting out such a high quality, high caliber film that is as close to a concert as you can get .... by the way, in these 3,000 person theatres every single seat is a great seat ... you don't have to be in the front row to enjoy the show, unless you arrive with a chip on your shoulder ... one comment on the trunk show is that while I didn't love Chrome Dreams the album and listened to it maybe twice, the new tunes live are totally epic, Neil is on fire and he really breaths life into them ... hope this twisted road tour brings out some fresh Neil material ...

To anon (parts 1 and 2) and others of a similar mindset

I always find the ticket price argument interesting. If the americans on hear dont want to pay as low $76 to see Neil in a 2500 seat theatre, I hope none of you buy tickets and the tour is cancelled. He can come down to Aust and play 2600 seat theatres here . Only tours we get are one stop in a few major cities in an arena. Ticket prices for these NY shows last year were on par with artists of his stature - $100 AUD for the majority and $150 aud near the front. I think the show I saw was almost 2.5 hrs and he doesnt sell those ridiculous meet and greet vip tickets for a $1000 either . So keep whining and we'll be happy to see him down here sooner rather than later.

The fact is that ticket prices are the major source of income for artists these days, particularly for those like Neil where radio play of new music is non existent ,cd sales have tanked and he hasnt whored himself out to play corporate shows for Apple. Not that he needs the money, he's the first to admit he's very wealthy, but I dont begrudge him making a tidy profit, as if we wouldnt do it. Maybe it Will give him some spare change for Lincvolt, Bridge, Farm Aid and god knows what else he gives away without us knowing. I suppose he could sell his songs for use in the latest BMW ad, and sell his rights soul to Live Nation, and you'd get your lower ticket prices. I'd rather pay the higher ticker prices myself. If all he wanted was to be a greedy bastard and rip people off, you dont do it by playing 2500 seat theatres. Otherwise everyone of his stature would be doing it! You play long runs of big arena shows and still charge about $150-200 .The might be the enxt part of the tour ....:)

Ha ha .....Jackson Browne for $60 or Neil for $75 in a 2600 theatre , not really your best example of how Neil is ripping us off.I wouldnt wipe my ass with the $25 Jackson Brown hat you bought, but each to their own I suppose there.

I don't count myself as part of the cult either - maybe some here are. Everyone has their right to an opinion, but I just dont agree with yours. The way you carry on you'd swear he was Madoff and he'd lost your investment! Some of the ticket price haters need to gain some perspective, just like you suggest some of the so called cult members should .

Cheers,

Mick

Sorry to over expose myself with three posts, its hard to hold back on this. Mick, I totally agree. For most of the people complaining its a knee jerk emotional reaction not a logical one. Yes $250 is a lot of money but being able to see him in a 2,600 person venue for $85 is an excellent deal these days especially for a legend who happens to still be in his prime ... During the '08 tour it was front row tickets for like $75 ... If some fat cat banker wants to pay $250 for a front row seat to feel important who cares as long as everyone can get in for a minimum of $85. His choosing to play in small theatres and calling him greedy is just a ridiculous contradiction... Its an argument that is totally unjustifiable but the 4%ers will ignore it and bitch and moan about it until the tour starts ... And I'm not angry about the 'dissenters' and I'm not brainwashed, or in a cult ... I've criticized Neil before ... but open your eyes -- greedy is when the stones do a reunion tour of oldies and play stadiums ... it aint Neil Young breaking out classics for the first time in 30 years in 2,600 person theatres 'aka' 2007 tour. Come on, lets have some honesty here!

Why charge $250 when you can charge $150? Petty & Springsteen are both BELOW $150 with bands. I love Neil. I wish he showed the love for our pocketbooks.

(As for the costs breakdown someone offered, if you think promoters etc get 1/2 of the gross, and Bert Jansch is getting 40K - get real!).

Yes it is great to see Neil in a small venue. But guess what - he cannot sell out big venues with a solo show.

I guess it just hurts to be taken advantage of by someone we love so much.

I hope & pray there will be a similar tour with Bert in the UK. I'm a huge fan of Bert (30+ albums; last saw him at Pentangle Reunion).
Just a note: you say in ACOUSTIC ROUTES "Bert talks about his first album, his early influences, Anne Briggs, Jimmy Page et cetera." - That reads like Bert was influenced by Jimmy Page but it was the other way around. Bert was influenced by Anne Briggs, and still holds her in revere.
ACOUSTIC ROUTES was made in 1992. I recorded it on VHS when it was first broadcast, but tape ran out! & had to put very end on a separate tape.
I did write to BBC asking if there was any chance it might be broadcast again, or put on DVD (Preferably the latter).I was told enough people would have to write to BBC about it for it to happen.

If you want to see this documentary in all it's glory then put pen to paper. The address is:

Programming & Acquisitions Dept
2 entertain
33 Foley Street
London
W1W 7TL

More info re the film at:

http://www.visibility.net/acr2004/info.htm

Also, the BBC really ought to re-broadcast &/or put out on DVD Bert's 60th bash, with Johnny Marr; Ralph McTell; Jacqui McShee and Bernard Butler:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/music/features/bert-jansch.shtml
There's a couple of lo-fi video interviews there. So typical that, until he met Johnny Marr, Bert did not even know what a guitar tech was :)

Everyone is complaining about high ticket prices. We should just be happy that he is playing. If you don't want to pay $245 than pay $85. The venues are so small that the cheaper priced tickets are well worth it. Can't wait to see Neil for the 25th time. I've been waiting so long. Thanks for the musical ride
