That Note is For You!
Colorado Springs, CO Concert Review
February 29, 2004 - World Arena

Wow, what a night...where to begin?
First of all the setlist; I don't know it. (sorry). I can say that all of Greendale was played and then a bunch of stuff that *all* was on Weld. Nothing out of the ordinary on this one. But still a great concert.
My evening started with a most enjoyable pre-show fest. A great group of people came to this one, that's for sure. For once, I think I made contact and talked to just about everyone in attendance and I was in awe of the niceness of the people that are my fellow fans.
The show was in an arena that holds about 8000. I was fortunate to snap up front row during the presale (thanks David Lybrand for all you do to make those presales possible). This was my first time in 27 or so years of attending Neil Young shows of actually sitting in the front. It was incredible. Almost like being at your own personal concert.
Greendale was tremendous and even though a portion of the back screen and part of the EE Rancho were obstructed, I was real close to Billy's microphone and about 10 feet from Neil's setup. I made eye contact a couple of times with Neil and could see all of his expressions and all his fancy footwork on his red gizmo and see his hands intricately playing his guitar and watch Poncho do his thing and see the Greendale players really closeup. It was indescribly satisfying to watch a Neil Young concert from such a vantage point and I feel so fortunate to have been lucky enough to score those fine seats.
The second set was good. I could tell the band was having a lot of fun with it and the sound was really good, really hot. It looked like right after Cinnamon Girl they almost went into Down By The River but at the last second, Neil decided on Fuckin' Up. He intentionally unleashed his guitar strings after that one and Larry Cragg was nice enough to give it to me and a fellow Rustie after the show (we cut it in half to share it); my first artifact from a Neil show I attended! I think it's still playing that last note from the song. It used to be on Old Black and Neil touched it and played it; pretty darn cool.
One thing I noticed is that it's dangerous up there with Ralph's drumstick parts flying out all the time. It's a wonder he doesn't put one of the guys' eyes out with all that wood flying.
I loved this show and had a great time.
Mike
