Listen to MP3 clips of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
In 2004 Rustie, Mike "Expecting 2 Fly" Cordova posted a series of articles on his experience listening to all of Neil Young's albums in chronological order. Here is one in the series. For a complete listing, see Albums in Order reviews.
Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 14:51:36 -0800 (PST) I have Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere on repeat play. I
think I'll leave it there a while. I have many memories of
this album and I love every single song on it.
Memory one: I was in college on a road trip with a friend
and Running Dry was playing. He started singing along and
I swear there were tears rolling down his face by the time
the song ended. He told me how the tune hit a chord with a
relationship-in-upheaval he was having. Guys aren't
usually this emotionally open with each other, but I could
really understand what he was saying since Running Dry
speaks deeply and darkly to me too.
Memory two: I was in 10th grade at a friend's house
listening to Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This guy knew music and turned me onto
some great stuff. As the last part of Cinnamon Girl was
playing, he told me he thought Danny Whitten was the real
musical genius in Crazy Horse. I didn't agree with him,
but I always listened more carefully to his parts on this
album after that. He wasn't far from the truth, that's for
sure.
Memory three: I was in 9th grade, a little before I got
into Neil. I was at a high school dance and remember the
band playing the (at the time) vaguely familiar Down By
The River. When I first listened to the album, I remember
thinking "that's where that song is from!"
I very much enjoyed listening to Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere today.
