In 2004 Rustie, Mike "Expecting 2 Fly" Cordova posted a series of articles on his experience listening to all of Neil Young's albums in chronological order. Here is one in the series. For a complete listing, see Albums in Order reviews.
Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 14:51:36 -0800 (PST) After The Goldrush made me into such a fan, that I went out and bought
all the albums previous to that one and all the BS and
CSNY. So, when I heard Neil Young was coming out with a
new album in 1972, I couldn't wait. Starting with Harvest
all the way until now, I have bought every Neil Young
album as soon as I could when it came out.
I was in high school, living in Idaho. We had one stereo
in the house, and I couldn't play it to my preferred
volume level on the speakers, so I had headphones and an
extension cord that would reach my bedroom. The day came,
I brought the record home and unwrapped it and savored the
cover art as I listened....
I remember going into an immediate trance as soon as Out
On The Weekend started. The theme fit right into my teen
angst years. And I thought the sound of the album, with
lots of steel guitar and harmonica, was very different
from the previous records. I played the album constantly;
so did a lot of other people. Heart Of Gold was a big hit
and the Harvest album sold more than any album of the
year. But my friends still gave me a hard time for
listening to Neil, teasing me about his voice and the
general mellowness of the music. I was on a swim team and
after a not-so-fast race I was in, one of my friends told
me he swam faster than me because he had Black Sabbath in
his mind while I only had the thump thump thump of Neil
Young's Harvest in mine. I thought that was pretty
funny...
I very much enjoyed listening to Harvest today.
